Alcohols

An alcohol is a molecule with an OH group that takes the place of a hydrogen atom.

Naming Alcohols Alcohols are named just like alkanes, but with an -ol ending. You also need to put a number in front of the name, separated with a dash, to indicate which carbon atom the -OH group is attached to. For Example: Pentane with an OH on the first carbon atom becomes 1-pentanol.

1-pentanol

Pentane with an OH on the second carbon becomes 2-pentanol.

2-pentanol
