Although at present the economy may be healthy, however everybody knows of the deteriorating condition of British society that Labour has failed to address. There is no doubt that Labour and the Liberal Democrats have the best intentions, however their excessively politically correct proposals will not address the heart of the problem and will unfortunately fail despite this intention. Should we therefore continue down the road we have been heading– a selfish, violent and permissive society riddled with social problems? Or should we both progress and return to a society based on conservative values; a society based on respect for authority, respect for tradition most importantly respect for each other: a society where conformity and not rebellion is the main virtue; whilst retaining a healthy and rational criticism where authoritative institutions get matters wrong.
Contemporary conservatism should embrace the notion of ‘One Nation’. Britain is increasingly becoming a divided nation on many levels, and I believe all persons could unite behind the values that what makes Britain unique. Moreover, in recent history ‘conservatism’ has become stigmatised - I wish to illustrate that conservatism has always been the pragmatic Briton’s approach, and that believe it or not there is an element of conservatism in all of us which we should not be afraid of!! British conservatism has always shown the right balance of retaining the best aspects of the past, whilst adapting to gradual social changes. We should remind the general public of our party’s historic progressive achievements; we were the party who extended the franchise to the working classes, we enforced ground breaking social reform legislation in the 19th Century, and was the first major party to have a female leader. Ultimately, we should be showing that conservatism has always been and should continue to be the natural choice of Britain.
N.B: these are only ideas of a current Conservative party member who has no links with the Parliamentary party or the front bench, and must NOT be mistaken for actual official Conservative Party thought.
