"The eBay Buck"

It had been 2 years since I shot an antlered deer. I decided this year to take along a bow I got on Ebay for $85. An old 1972 Bear Kodiak Magnum, 55# @28". My arrow/broadhead combo was a 29" 2018 with 190 grain Ribteks. Total arrow weight approached 640 grains!! With this combination my chronograph showed 159 fps!!

Not exactly "fast" by today's standards.

On October 24, 2003, my buddy called me up to see if I wanted to hunt this new farm. I, naturally, did not decline. The farm was about 500 acres with a 200 acre woods surrounded by soybeans on the south and west, with corn on the north and east. I started calling...buck grunt...followed by some estrous doe bleats at around 5:30 pm. Since around 3:00 pm, the woods were "alive" with what seemed like 300 chipmunks!! After awhile...you become "immune" to the scurrying of these little critters.

Anyways, back to the hunt. After some calling, I "heard" some footfalls behind me ( I was in a cherry tree about 27' up), I readied my bow.... To my surprise, this nice 8-pointer walked directly below me and started to quarter away at around 18 yards. I did not try to stop him...just picked my spot in front of his right ham. As soon as my right hand hit my anchor....therwaaapp....looked like a good shot...complete pass-thru!!

40 yards away lay my buck....a welcome homecoming!!

Until next year....
