This in & out connection is used for a cassette deck/minidisc (analogue) deck. You can playback from the cassette deck, and can also record to the tape deck from other sources,ie, CD to copy a CD to tape (you need to select RECORD source/output on the amp) If your Minidisc has digital in, and CD player has digital out you can go direct from the CD to Minidisc deck via a coaxial/optical lead- this will sound better than going through your amp via analogue phono leads.

This will bypass the CD's players DAC (Digital to Analogue converter), the analogue phono leads and the Minidisc's ADC (Analogue to Digital converter) Be careful not to cause feedback, not sure how this is done but it's possible somehow.
