Germany has been one of the most contraversial states in the 20th Century. The aggressor in both World Wars, Germany in the period of 1914 - 1950 suffered serious economic and political instability. Since when they have regained the position as a leading economic European and World power. From Hitler to the modern day, Germany has had a checkered past whilst still maintaining strong nationalism and international prestige.

Historians have however argued that although Germany, Italy and Japan were aggressors and so ultimaltely started World War II, many parties and events must share in the blame that caused the Second World War. There is also a strong link between the peace settlement of the First World War and the causes for the Second. Hitler and Mussolini used the Second World War to install a hegemonic Fascist ideology into Europe and so attempt to replace and destroy both Democracy and Communism. Their eventual defeat caused many problems throughout Europe. The Peace Settlement after World War II would lead to the foundations to the Cold War and the division of Germany by the infamous Berlin Wall.
