I have to apologize for using Ryan's pictures on the pic of the week but he had managed to snap a few pictures while in Thailand during the earthquake and subsequent tsunamis. The little town, Ton Sai, he and a friend were vacationing in for rock climbing and general tropical fun did not receive nearly as big waves as neighboring Phuket or Phi Phi but neverless several surges waves crashed onto the beach. Ryan mentioned a very surreal scene where all the boat tenders went scrambling for their vessels as the water receeded way down the beach. Then, "we watched a 15ft wave decimate the beach community here, as we ran inland, buildings crumpling and boats smashing into restaurants". The first shot above is the second swell of waves; about 10 feet high. What Ryan was doing hanging out on the beach at that point I don't know. Thankfully Ryan and his friend had been nursing some digestive problems and weren't on the beach or climbing on the coastal rocks. There was one internet cafe on the island so we all heard relatively quickly that they were okay.
This is definitely the worst natural disaster in my lifetime. Such a sombering event to coincide with the birth of my son. I truly cannot imagine how many of these people who lost loved ones are coping.
