The new Seattle Central Library opened this weekend. Since our firm did the structural on it and our office looks right down on the top I've watched with anticipation. I actually took a tour of the building about 8 months ago while it was in construction. During that tour, my lasting impression was feeling like I was in a birdcage or prison cell with all the structural steel in the seismic grid surrounding the building. I love the building from the outside and think my opinion from inside will be changed now that the steel is painted (less noticeable) and all the interior is finished. I walked around the outside on opening day and found many cool angles to shoot all the various overhanging elements. I like the reflections of the street below -- you can probably see me in one of them as I stood below and took a pic straight up.
