Kalmiah Birmans
established in 1988 is a small breeding cattery of classic Birmans. Pure
Seal and Blue points only. Our foundation queens were Khadine Khareena
(bred by Col & Di Mckenzie), Amunsden Allira (bred by Val Eitzen)
whose progeny we still have and are still producing. Ch.Eldorato Lucia
and Eldorato Rambo (bred by Lesley
Freemann). Most of these Birmans were bred from Badarene
bloodlines, imported from Europe by Risse and Ivan Harmath.
Later
new colours were introduced
nation-wide and many other breeders embarked on breeding programs using
domestic shorthairs, Siamese and Chinchilla and Colourpoint Persians.
Many years of work followed and several importations from Europe and the
United States helped these programmes Chocolate, Lilac, Red ,Cream,
Torti, Tabby and Torti-Tabby points appeared .Most breeders were very
taken and many beautiful cats were bred. The new colours were winners,
with stunning eye colour and thick, long coats ,they did very well. The
Seal and Blue point colour carriers also did well with great eyes and
paler coats. Most
pure Seals and Blues suffered on the show bench as a result and we
subsequently purchased a Chocolate point male (who did reasonably well
at shows) with the idea of lightening our coats and improving our eye
colour. His behaviour concerned us, the noisiest kitten and cat we have
ever known. Very affectionate but also extremely demanding, in fact,
quite frenetic, climbing all over the house becoming noisier and
noisier. He began to sound like a “baby”. It dawned on us that this
could be his Siamese heritage coming to the fore We were
not prepared to sacrifice the lovely, quiet voices and gentle unassuming
natures of the ‘Rolls Royce’ of the cat world for ‘better ‘ eye
colour. (We also believe that the better ‘eyecolour’ is incorrect
for our Birmans ,whose eyes ,as legend has it should be able to look
through to your very soul,) Our Birmans are not meant to have almost
white coats ,the Seals should have a golden hue and Blue points ‘cold
‘overtones. Kalmiah Birmans are not often shown in 2007, and with a
diminishing gene pool of ‘pure’ lineage it is becoming harder and
harder to keep what we at Kalmiah feel is the correct look, not new by
any means but with a nature second to none , our no ‘Siamese’ eye
colour more of a medium blue . Not thick, long coats but true semi
longhairs that are silky and knot free. Kalmiah
babies are reared in our home and are well socialised, being used to our
family of small dogs .Our babies come to you with all the hard
“stuff” already done. They are microchipped, desexed and have had
their first two vaccinations, along with being housetrained and
parasite-free ,they are an ideal indoor companion. If you become the
fortunate owner of a Kalmiah Birman please remember we offer an after
“sales service” and we can offer assistance in boarding when your
Birman needs a holiday.
