The next morning, Josh got up early and quietly made himself breakfast. Sabrina asked him to wake her up, but he decided to let her sleep in. ‘No’, he thought, ‘make her sleep in’.
As the hours crept by, Josh cleaned the kitchen and unpacked. He was about to take a walk when Sabrina ran down the stairs. "Josh! Why didn’t you wake me up?! You were supposed to wake me up four hours ago!" "You’re exhausted, you needed the rest." "What about CJ? What if something’s happened to CJ? Do you have any idea what it’s like to lose someone you love?! To sit at his bedside hoping he’ll wake up?!" Josh’s face turned to stone. "You mean like my grandmother?" Sabrina wanted to kick herself repeatedly. "God, I’m so sorry." She sat and placed her head in her hands. "How could I have forgotten that you know exactly what I’m going through?" Josh knelt in front of her. "I also remember being so stressed out that my family took turns biting each other’s heads off." He touched her cheek. "Come on, I’ll make you breakfast." Sabrina looked at her clock. "Don’t you mean lunch?"
After lunch, Josh and Sabrina went to the hospital. Josh was not prepared for the shock of seeing CJ. His face was black and blue from bruises and he was connected to a variety of monitors. Mechanically, Sabrina sat beside him and held his hand. For an hour, Josh watched Sabrina in silent vigil. "I feel so helpless." She said. "I wish there was something I could do besides sit here." "There is." Josh took her hand and pulled her out of her chair. "Josh!" "Trust me." They went into the hall where Josh quickly scanned the hospital map and led her around a series of corners until they stood outside the chapel. There was a plain altar with a simple cross in the front, but off to the side was a statue of Mary and Joseph holding the infant Jesus. Sabrina knelt before the Holy Family and lit a candle. Josh went back to CJ’s room to give her some privacy.
About a half-hour later, Josh felt her squeeze his shoulder. She’d been crying, but overall, she looked more relaxed. Josh stood and hugged her. "Bri, let me take you out of here. I promise to show you a great time." "But CJ-" "CJ would want you to go out and have some fun. Come on."
Reluctantly, Sabrina let Josh take her to the Shack. They ate and danced a little. They were about to sit down when the DJ played ‘Your Body Is A Wonderland’. Josh smiled as Sabrina’s face lit up. Josh twirled her around and they went back to the dance floor. They danced slowly, but not too slowly; close but not too close, the way people who were ‘just friends now’ danced to love ballads. Josh noticed for the first time that Sabrina was wearing the same blue dress she wore when they kissed for the first time. He found himself being enchanted by her beauty as he had that day. The sparkle in her eyes was back and Josh suddenly remembered the effect they always had on him. Looking at them now, he wondered how he could’ve forgotten. He twirled Sabrina around and pulled her close. Instinctively, he kissed her head, smelling her hair. Josh was surprised and alarmed by the way he was acting and feeling. This was no time to realize that he was still very much attracted to her. He forced himself to put more distance between them. He gauged her face for a reaction, but she seemed oblivious, for which Josh was thankful.
Hours later, Josh struggled to fall asleep. He couldn’t stop thinking about Sabrina and their evening together. ‘The light the heat, I am complete.’ The lyrics ran through his head against his will. Josh steeled himself. He was here to help Sabrina, not date her; he wasn’t even sure that’s what he wanted. Suddenly, he heard Sabrina screaming. He ran into her room and onto her bed. She was thrashing about and nearly hit Josh more than once. "Bri! Bri, wake up!" Sabrina awoke with a start and sat up, into his arms. She clung tightly to him. "What was it, sweetheart? What did you dream?" "CJ and I were swimming in the lake. All of a sudden, he started drowning. I kept trying to save him, but I couldn’t. I couldn’t save him." Sabrina’s tears flowed as she spoke. Josh had always hated seeing her cry; it broke his heart. He pulled her close and lay down so Sabrina’s head rested on his chest. He silently ran his fingers down her back for a few minutes. He kissed her head and sang softly until she fell asleep. "No woman, no cry. No woman, no cry. Here, little darlin’, don’t shed no tear. No woman, no cry."
