Brown on the mend

Kevin Brown is continuing to recover in a London hospital.

The injured linesman recently had feeding tubes inserted, according to New Hamburg Firebirds trainer Greg Henning. Brown's vital signs were normal and he is still responding with thumbs up or thumbs down when asked to communicate.

He also recognizes everyone he sees at London Health Sciences Centre.

The 25-year-old Sebringvillearea official has been in hospital since his carotid artery was severed while trying to break up a Junior C fight Dec. 29 at Southwood Arena.

His injury led to the Ontario Hockey Association's decision Wednesday to make neck guards mandatory for all officials beginning Feb. 1.

The Stratford Referees Association was the first group to implement neck guards in the days after Brown's injury.

Support for Brown has poured in from across Canada and the United States, and a Facebook group wishing him a full recovery currently has nearly 1,700 members.
