TIMELINE
- 1949: 35,000 Chinese troops invade Tibet in an act of unprovoked agression
- 1951: China and Tibet signed the 17 point agreement which stated that China wouldnt interfere with Tibet's existing government and society. China never kept this promise. Chinese army invades capital of Tibet, Lhasa
- 1959: 100,000 Tibetan's fled along with the Dalai Lama to neighbouring lands. China reneged on the 17 point treaty altogether
- 1960: Influx of Chinese nationals destabalises the economy. Forced agricultural modernisations destroys crops and causes Tibet's first ever famine
- 1962: Famine finally ends
- 1979: Religious practice forcibly controlled and supressed until now, up to 6,000 monasteries and shrines destroyed
- 1988: Indian officials report that 3 nuclear missile sites and an estimated 300,000 Chinese troops are stationed in Tibet
- 1989: China conducted campaign of torture against Tibetan prisoners
- 1990: Chinese replaced Tibetan as the official language of Tibet. Chinese admitted there was 44,000 Chinese civilians in Lhasa, and 80,000 in Tibet. Independant observers say it is much higher
- 1992: 10,000 children sent to China for education and cut off from their cultural heritage
- 1994: Chinese teaching young Tibetan's that Tibet was never independent
- 1996: "Spiritual Civilization" and "Strike Hard" campaigns, all anti-Dalai Lama and anti-Splittist. Spiritual Civilization aimed at cleansing monks and nuns of the foolish backward atmosphere given to them by the Dalai
- 1997: Another anti-Dalai Lama campaign "Patriotic Education"
- 1999: Propaganda drive to promote atheism launched
- 2000 -: Continuing human rights violations
