The contract was dated October 14, 1840, and stated that three of his neighbors, Hugh Newell, Jesse Liggate and Benjamine Coddington, would raise one million dollars for a "Flying Car or Machien to soar through the air propelled upon the principal which the Fowls of the air propel themselves." Maybe there were more investors than the contract stated and maybe Burton and others helped in the undertaking. On through the administration of Ronald Reagan, we were still warned against the "ev-l empire" and the costly Cold War continued. Kennedy was appraised of, and had access to, sufficient classified information, to have personally come to the conclusion that UFOs and therefore possible alien life-forms were possibly extant within our solar system. . . A whole JFK issue evolved around his planned speech at the Dallas Trade Mart, the destination of his ill-fated motorcade on Nov. 22, 1963. Several researchers and some tabloids have claimed that he planned to change his scheduled talk and referred to handwritten notes, which may have included comments regarding UFOs. These notes have never been made public and so continue to be fodder for theorists. With all the evidence now at hand, there can be little doubt that President Kennedy may have known more about UFOs than is generally believed. I personally remember walking around as a five year old reciting JFK's "Ask Not" speech to my neighbors shortly before my age five event where I saw many interesting things. Among them where a paper thin screen or book containing scrolling backlit symbols with a simplified omega symbol on the upper lefthand corner and the presence of human divers or frog men who were suspended in depressurized water between inner and outer domes of a well concealed underwater city at 400 fathoms. I was largely raised in Ventura, California; my mother ran the household while my father worked to support the family. His entire career was spent working for the federal government, and all but one year was spent working for the Department of Defense. The nearby military bases employed most of the area’s professionals, so some of my friends’ fathers (as well as several of my father’s friends) also worked for the military. If anything, the political outlook I was raised with was fairly Cold War, but not too pronounced. I was taught that the Soviets were the bad guys, and my family generally supported politicians from the Democratic Party. My father was rather outraged when Nixon won the presidency in 1968, and I was saddened when Reagan beat Carter in 1980. My political outlook was a fairly mainstream one, which means that I was ignorant. I read the! newspaper virtually everyday, from age 10 to 27, thinking that I was getting the “news.” I had some spiritual training that came in handy later on, but I was like most people of my age, assimilating my indoctrination. I kept my eyes open to see how closely reality matched my ideals, because I needed to honestly believe in my ideals. Upon graduating from college, I had a rather rude awakening, and indoctrination and ideals brutally collided with reality. I eventually realized that my profession was virtually worthless, although that full realization was not clear for several years. Then I met Dennis Lee, and was able to live my dreams of trying to bring alternative energy to the world. After meeting Dennis, I had a very rude awakening. That was when my political education began in earnest. Our efforts at developing alternative energy were definitely the targets of conspiracies. Policemen and others committed felonies while pursuing us, leading to the death of one woman. We received offers to buy us out, which culminated in an offer probably in excess of $1 billion, to bribe us to stop pursuing alternative energy. ARCHEOLOGY Discovery of a Hidden Chamber in the Great Pyramid? A perennial question asked about the Great Pyramid is: Are there any hidden chambers? Archeologists, both amateur and professional, have been searching for secret chambers for a couple centuries without success. After all, hidden chambers *have* been found in some of the other Egyptian pyramids--- two at Meidum, for example. The Great Pyramid, largest of all, could easily hide a secret room. And then there is the fact that the mummy of the Great Pyramid's builder, Khufu, has never been found. Might it not be cached away somewhere within the Pyramid's great bulk while searchers are misled by the empty sarcophagus in the King's Chamber? Besides the King's barren chamber, the Great Pyramid encloses the Queen's Chamber, the Grand Gallery, several corridors, and, far beneath, the Subterranean Chamber, also barren of Khufu's mummy. The popular suspicion is that none of the three chambers is Khufu's actual burial site. Students of ancient Egypt are psychologically driven to look for that secret chamber. It *must* be somewhere. And there has been no shortage of searchers. Of all the potential search equipment provided by modern technology, ground-penetrating radar seems the most promising. A French team led by G. Dormion has been using "georadar" in the age-old quest. One of Dormion's prime targets has been the ever-mysterious Queen's Chamber. It is suspicious for several reasons. ¤ The walls are beautifully finished, but the floor is rough and looks like it might have been rebuilt. ¤ There is a curious niche 3 feet, 5 inches deep in one wall. ¤ This chamber had blind air shafts, which were not found until 1872, when by hunch and analogy with the King's Chamber, W. Dixon took a chisel to one of the walls. ¤ It was in one of these hidden air shafts that a robot found a still-mysterious door. The finding could reveal new facts about the origins of language, they add. The language network of the brain seemed simpler in the past. One brain area was recognized to be critical for the production of language, another for its comprehension. A dense bundle of nerve fibers connected the two. But there have always been naysayers who pointed to evidence that failed to fit this tidy picture. The new study, published in the December 13, 2004 online edition of the research journal Annals of Neurology, bears this out, the researchers said. “We were surprised that the two classical language areas were densely connected to a third area, whose presence had already been suspected but whose connections with the classical network were unknown,” said Marco Catani, a psychiatrist at King’s College London and lead author of the study. The authors dubbed this language area “Geschwind’s territory” in honor of the American neurologist Norman Geschwind who championed its linguistic significance decades ago. Language is generated and understood in the cortex, the outermost covering of the brain. Paul Broca and Carl Wernicke, 19th Century neurologists, noted that damage to specific cortical areas, which came to bear their names, produced primarily language production or language processing disorders, but not both. A large bundle of nerve fibers was found to connect Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas, and damage to this pathway also produced language disorders. However, even in the 19th Century, there were bits of evidence that other brain areas play some role in language, though these have remained enigmatic, as scientists could not use animals to probe language networks in the same way they could visual or movement networks in the brain. In the last few decades, advanced brain imaging techniques have allowed scientists to begin studying these areas in living humans. One of the more recent techniques, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), allows researchers to identify which areas are being used during different tasks, including producing and comprehending language. A new variant of this technique, called Diffusion tensor MRI, reveals in greater detail the nerve fiber connections through which different brain regions form communication networks, researchers say. Using this new method, Catani and his colleagues found a separate, roundabout route that connects Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas via a region in the parietal lobe of the cortex, the region at the top of the brain. Geschwind had pointed this out as an important language region already in the 1960s. “There are clues that the parallel pathway network we found is important for the acquisition of language in childhood,” said Catani. “Geschwind’s territory is the last area in the brain to mature, the completion of its maturation coinciding with the development of reading and writing skills. An important future line of study will be to examine the maturation of this area and its connections in the context of autism and dyslexia.” These pathways appear to exist – in more rudimentary forms – in the brains of monkeys, the researchers said, which may have bearing on the search for the evolutionary origins of language. “These data suggest that language evolved, in part, from changes in pre-existing networks, not through the appearance of new brain structures,” said Catani. “This method provides another example of the remarkable versatility of MRI technology,” said Marsel Mesulam of Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, who has written an editorial scheduled to accompany the print publication of the article. Archaeologists, geologists and historians based at the University of London will don Davy lamps in an effort to shed light on the ancient county town's historical underground network. Members of Subterranea Britannica contacted the Mercury following our story last week about the secret chambers and passages said to connect key sites in Hertford, including County Hall and the Castle. The vice-chairman of the society, MC Black, said: "I was fascinated to read about the tunnels and would be very interested to look into them further. "I will be contacting members with some expertise including geologists and archaeologists to visit Hertford and try to verify the extent of the system." And he asked a Mercury reporter to give a presentation on the search for hidden Hertford to the society, which has an advisory role with the Ministry of Defense, at their annual meeting in Cambridge next year. The move comes despite a threat from a sinister secret society based in Hertford, which warned people not to delve deeper into the town's subterranean secrets. The menacing message was posted on community website wareonline.co.uk this week, but quickly removed. It was written by a character called 'Retarius' and read: "Those responsible had no business publicizing any of the Templar tunnels, disused or otherwise." It appeared to warn the Templars who had revealed the tunnel network that they would be "dealt with" and added: "Anybody intending to find out more, let alone discover hidden areas of the labyrinth, should check their life insurance policy very carefully indeed." The message sent a shiver through the spine of Templar twins Ben and Tim Acheson, who exposed the secret tunnels to the Mercury. But Ben said: "As long as we're responding to emails and calls, and unless there is blood on my sword, or my brother's sword, I think you can safely assume that we have not been 'dealt with' yet." Last week the Achesons spoke about how they believe the tunnels could even hold a clue in the search for the Holy Grail. It is believed to have been kept by the Templars, a group of warrior monks who date back to the Crusades. Some of the knights were based at Temple Chelsin, Bengeo, and are said to have buried treasure which, despite efforts by King Edward II almost 600 years ago, was never found. Does Ware have its own subterranean secrets? AFTER revelations that a warren of tunnels runs beneath Hertford, there are claims that Ware could have its own dark and secret labyrinth. The Mercury's report last week revealing Hertford's subterranean heritage has sparked speculation in Ware that it too has a set of chambers and passages. It is believed that monks who lived in The Priory used a tunnel to gain underground access to St Mary's Church in Church Street. Christina Yanetski, who owns the Tap Bar in High Street, believes that her medieval cellar is the entrance to a tunnel that may once have led to the Priory or the church. She said: "I think the monks must have used it as an escape route during the Reformation. "It is sweet to think that they also used it to come and get a pint from the pub, which has been here since 1452." But a Priory spokeswoman claimed that there is no tunnel in the crypt and local historian and publisher David Perman said that the labyrinth is a myth. He told the Mercury: "There are two rivers underneath Baldock Street which run through tunnels and there are lots of vaulted cellars in places in the town. "There are supposed to be tunnels running from Manor House in Church Street to The Priory and Thunder Hall at the top of Baldock Street, and to St Mary's Church. "But I don't believe any of them exist because there isn't a crypt in the church - you'd have to fight your way through coffins to reach it from underground. "There are legends that the monks would use a tunnel from the Priory to the pub, which is now the Tap Bar, and that they would knock on the door to collect some beer. It's all legend." But Christina said: "I live in Crib Street and there is definitely an entrance to a tunnel in the garden." There is a local legend that the Tap Bar tunnel collapsed, killing several monks, and nobody has dared brave the dark passage under the pub ever since. But some residents are undaunted by the claims from the local historian and a group of them are set to go on a mission to explore the tunnels using a video camera. One said: "There is at least one tunnel beneath Ware town centre, a secret passage connecting the vault beneath St Mary's Church and the medieval crypt of Ware Priory. Libertarians believe that no one should be controlled by anyone. That under the Constitution a SMALL government was meant to govern. Not regulate. Unlike the major two recognized parties in the USA, Libertarians decide on our position to each problem or situation using a very simple yardstick: "No one has the right to control anyone else's actions as long as those actions do not harm another person through the use of violence, fraud or deception. Only in those cases has the government any right to step in." The main problem is that through the “training” we receive from government controlled schools etc. it has become almost an inbred belief that certain people have the selfish right to push their beliefs down the throats of those of us who think differently and use the governments guns to enforce those beliefs. This is not “liberty for all” by any means. Something most Americans can’t do. As for the Libertarian movement. I remember one of the first meetings held in a garage in Southern California by those of us who felt this way back in 1972. It was explained to those of us at that meeting that the movement was a “200 year plan” … just as it took the Republican Party that long to be recognized. I’m happy to say that we gained a few more votes in the last election, just as we do every election. People are slowly getting educated despite the top party calling-itself-two-parties, the Republic-rats, continuing efforts to keep the Libertarian point of view out of the lime light.
