THE AWAKENING

Chapter One : The Dream

“I can’t wait to give him this”, thought Michael after he bought his nephew the Sequel to his favorite movie, The Awakening. It was about aliens, “They got it all wrong” said Michael humorously. He noticed two groups of people on either side of him, they were eyeing the other up. Michael, fearing a confrontation, turned his head away from them and walked a little faster. BANG!

That’s where the dream always ended; the dream was about the pointless death of Lances best friend, Michael. As the dream suggested, Michael died in a gang shootout. He was the only casualty, and not even a gang member. This dream was to realistic in Lances opinion, the way Michael kicked a pebble down the hall, a habit of his, the sound of Michael’s voice thanking the cashier, and of course Michael’s eyes. They didn’t match the rest of his body, just like they didn’t match in real life, not only did they not match his shaggy blonde hair, they didn’t match his personality, he had scowling, green eyes, light green. They were almost inhuman, Lance used to joke around and say Michael was from a different planet.

Lance, a 22-year-old substitute teacher, was getting ready to go to Michael’s Funeral. He had to comb back his jet-black hair, put on his formal clothes (which he rented), and start up his Impala. The Impala was rather worn out, but it got him to work and back. The only draw back was the car needed to be started at least 15 minutes prior to driving anywhere or else it would stall. This was especially true on a cold day such as that. He decided it would be best to start the car before changing.

Chapter Two: The First Sighting

The door of his car was locked, and the keys were inside, this did not affect Lance one bit, because if there was one thing Michael had taught him, it was how to pick a lock. He kept a “modified” bobby pin in his wallet for occasions such as this. And with a click the Impala was open, and soon it was running.

With a few pumps on the throttle, the Impala showed its true power. Confident the engine would be fine, Lance decided to scrape the windows clearing the frost. On his last window a piece of gravel caught his eye. It was like any other piece of gravel except it was moving. He wouldn’t have noticed it on a windy day, but today was chilly, maybe on the verge of a rainstorm, still it was not windy at all. The pebble stopped, and then moved again, as if it was being kicked. It rolled into a puddle, but what came next was not comparable to anything Lance has ever seen, even on TV. A hole appeared in the puddle, in the shape of an oval, though indented on each side, one more than the other. Lance soon realized it was a shoe, an invisible shoe. “No” he thought it was just the wind, but he remembered the wind was as nonexistent as the body for the shoe.

Lance was scared, very scared. So scared, his muscles were not listening to him. His legs shook, his bladder gave out, his grip left him. The scraper in his hand landed with a loud think. He heard a gasp as the footprint left, followed by a Quiet staccato thump, like running, whatever the foot was connected too feared Lance as much as Lance feared it.

Chapter Three: The Funeral

Freaky as it was, Lance knew had to attend the funeral, for he was a pallbearer .He got dressed, combed his hair, an he was off. On the way to the funeral he saw an FBI car heading the opposite way, Michael was a scientist, the FBI often called on him for research and autopsies. The man driving was in a dark black suit, with dark black hair and dark black glasses, “M-I-B” chuckled Lance. The car passed and he drove on.

Finally he reached the cemetery; he noticed handy men putting up a tarp above the plot where Michael would be buried. That was probably the only reason Lance noticed the rain, his mind was stuck on the footprint. And why were the FBI going towards his neighborhood, surely they must have known Michael was dead.

Again Lance had seen a man dressed in all black, he was with another man in all black, standing by yet another. The only thing Lance was sure about was they weren’t there to mourn Michael’s death.

All thoughts involving life had left Lances mind. The hearse was coming into the road of the cemetery. The last hearse Lance had seen was at his grandfather’s funeral, only a year ago, also a rainy day. He was a pallbearer then too. A small trickle of water came down his face, he thought it was rain at first, but he realized it was a tear. He tried to hold it back but he remembered the words of his English teacher Mr. E’bradovich, “Real men don’t hide the feelings, real men …… show emotion”. This thought made Lance tear up like a little kid.

The hearse stop, the rear doors opened, and Lance got ready to do one of the hardest things of his life. The oak coffin glimmered with the rain drops that covered it. He gripped the imitation gold handle and walked down the path to the plot. The coffin felt light, and it made a swishing sound when it was moved. Lance was sure there was some sort of liquid in there.

When the reached the destination, the 4 men took their seats in the reserved sections. The men in black walked up to the coffin and put two padlocks on it. They had a look of humor on their faces, Lance wanted to stand up and put them in their place. Before he even finished his unholy thoughts towards them they reached their car and drove away.

The priest had arrived, he did what he had to do and as soon as it had filled, the cemetery was empty. Michaels family had entered the church and many others followed closely behind. Lance however was determined to see what was in the coffin, because it sure wasn’t Michael.

Pulling out the tool of any thief (his bobby pin), Lance picked the first locked, with a clack it was open. It was the same with the second lock.

Chapter 4: The Truth

When he opened the coffin it was what he had expected, but he still was surprised beyond belief, the coffin was full of vials of chemicals. They all said M.B. on them, Michaels initials. First Lance thought Michael was turned into ooze like on “The Matrix”. Then he thought Michael needed the chemicals to survive. Whatever those chemicals were for, Lance needed to know.

Lance took a glance up to see if anyone was watching him. He saw more than he had hoped, yet he saw nothing. He saw the rain split in two to form the shape of a body, and this shape was approaching him. Lance’s muscle decided to act up again, for he couldn’t run. When the shape finally reached Lance’s position, it did what Lance had least expected, it grabbed a vial of the liquid.

Lance felt nauseous, he saw the shape take the cap of the vial and stuck the open end where a human’s mouth would be. The liquid went down what must have been it throat. It pulsated through it’s veins. Slowly a foot appeared, then another, next a pair of legs. What came next is how Lance new it was a man. A torso, arms, and a head soon followed. Lance saw the last thing he would expect, his best friend , it was the body of Michael Benton. Lance only saw his friend shortly before he fainted.

“I see the shock has worn off” chuckled the undead Michael. Lance was in the morgue, Michael must have picked the look and carried him in there. “What’s going on!” yelled Lance. “Remember our little talks about aliens? Remember how I said we probably couldn’t see them anyway” said Michael in a way which explained everything to Lance. Lance said the only thing he could think of “NO!”. Michael was humored once again, “Then explain to me what happened outside. And by your house, that was me. ”. Lance finally accepted his error in judgment, “Why didn’t you tell me?!”. “Did you see those men out there, the ones in black?” questioned Michael, “Well there out to get me, if I would have told you I wouldn’t be here now.”. “Oh.” Was all Lance could manage to say.

“Lance, aliens have been on earth for centuries. But only in the last decade have any of them been hostile. This is where I come in, my people offered your government a safe haven in the next galaxy, with the technology to get there. But they had to let us battle the stay on earth. They accepted the deal and we gave them enough food and supplies, as well as ships to go to the other planet. That was in 1993, in 1994 president Clinton nuked one of them attacking alien ships. The attackers never witnessed anything as brutal as a nuclear missile, the attackers just left, all of them, they were gone in a day. But your government kept our supplies, and they are planning on leaving earth--.” “for what?” said Lance, interrupting Michaels speech.

“Just Listen” said Michael “The truth is….. I’m not sure. But what’s important is their only takin’ 1 million people. They can be stopped though. We’re making an army to stop them, will you join?”

“Of course I will, but what’s it involve?” “Some fighting mostly spreading the word to more people.” “Why don’t we just let them leave? “They plan on using earth as a test site, I am not sure as I said before but they think through enough research they will conquer the Universe, which is basically impossible. They made some mistakes though, they have no idea how our Transport ships work. If we can destroy them we will definitely save earth!” said Michael optimistically.

Lance and his best friend set off with one thought keeping them going, if there’s a will , there’s a way! They wanted to save earth so there had to be a way to destroy the ship!

The End

i know the ending really blows, haha
