"War"

My friend Matt Schmidt drew this funky picture for me of an army guy with a gun. The guy had just shot another guy who wasn't in the picture. You could tell he'd just killed someone because he was crying. Matt then wrote a weird poem behind the picture. I was inspired so I wrote a piece of prose about war. This became a cool "Black Annie" song with a military march drum line. Very pointed! We even had a segment of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again" at the very end. Haunting!

"There could be a war" my friend said to me
But I had yet to understand why.
"Have we tried everything else?"
I asked and got a 'no' reply.

"There's going to be a war" my friend said to me
I knew of all the problems too large to solve.
"There's got to be something peaceful left, right?"
I asked and got a 'maybe' reply.

"A war has just started" my friend wrote to me
And fear for my brothers and sisters arose.
"How long will it last?"
I asked and 'I don't know' was the reply.

"Your friend just died" the was said to me
And coldness overcame me like a sheet.
"Did he die creating peace?"
I asked and got a 'yes' reply.
