"Stranger's Angel"

This piece became one of the best songs Matt Holtman and I ever wrote. He and I were always in disagreement as to a certain line from the Cure song "Just Like Heaven". He said it was 'Stanger's angel' and I thought it was 'Strange as angels'. I don't think we ever settled it. I wrote this one for Matt so he could have his 'Stanger's angel' line once and for all. We made this song the same way we made all the others; he had the riff, I flipped the pages of my poetry books until the right one found me, and, bang, it was done. But this time, it was perfect. This is a "Prayer" song, now, and I can't read it without hearing the melody in my head.

"Your face is like my mother's"
She said to me in faith.
"But that's not why I approached you"
I could see right through her eyes.
"I've lost my favorite wind. Have you seen it?"
But how could I see, see a westerly?
"I'm going back someday"
'To where?' was my bright question.

"You also feel like a friend"
But I still saw right through her eyes.
"But that's not why I stopped you"
She must've had a point there somewhere.
"The children; they are very hungry"
I was shocked that she could actually care.
"I'm going back real soon"
'To where?' still hung in my mind.

"You have a certain air about you"
I finally felt that I could trust her.
"But that's not why I'm here"
Her eyes were seriously set now.
"Have you ever met a saint?"
It seemed a little strangely put.
"I'm going back again tomorrow"
I felt that Heaven was where she meant.

That girl, she was one strange angel.
Such a stranger's angel.
