Don't Really Have Plans For Summer of 2003 - But of course are wanting to go
to RVA for Alumni Reunion?
Well - Maybe you would be interested in this
with me.
This is a very sketchy idea right now but want to get some feedback on if
anyone is interested so I would go ahead and get the details worked out. I
know Summer 2003 is a long ways away - but let's try to get a head start here.
The Idea:
A summer missions trip to
Uganda. We would have a team of just us (people in our class) that would
work as volunteer team in Uganda. As my parents are volunteer coordinators
they would organize this whole thing. I will be going over to do
some work anyways and thought it would be cool if there was a whole group of us
who wanted to get some missions work in a few weeks before alumni week and then
cruise over to Rift for that and finish with some time chilling and digging up
memories and creating new ones down in Mombasa. So, the idea - a group of
us go to UG as a volunteer missions team to do some work for a few weeks and
then go over to Kenya for reunion and vacation time.
What would we do?
There are a number of opportunities
in UG. It would mostly depend on what we decided as a group of course - so
there is some room for choice. There is a need for work with street kids
in Kampala and there is also work with Sudanese refugees in northern UG.
There are also some other opportunities around the area for working with
orphans, school children and children of prisoners.
Why is this a Plot Idea?
First of all - I know we are all MKs
or mostly know about that so we could skip a lot of the prep and orientation
time - my parents could arrange that. We would have a great time working
(if you are interested in missions at all) and would get to spend some time
together again in Africa. Of course, there would be a free weekend to Raft
the Nile if you haven't done so or would like to do it again. And the
biggest plot here is that we would already be in Africa by the time reunion came
around so we would not have to pay for tickets out of our pocket. We would
only have to cover travel to Kenya from UG and time spent in Mombasa. The
idea is that we would raise volunteer missionary support for our tickets over
and back to Uganda as well as costs while we are working there. So, this
could save you up to $1500 in the long run.
So - What to Do....
First and Foremost - Pray about
this. Are you interested in getting a little hands-on mission work most
likely with children? Maybe just want to spend some time in African
culture again? Pray about this - it is a very possible plan.
Second - Email me with a maybe or a
most likely or a hopefully or a glimmer of thought concerning this idea.
If you are anything but negative about this trip - send me a few lines of email
and let me know the issues. This could really turn out to be a great
idea.
