At an early age, he was orphaned on L2, a small space colony. Here, he met up with Solo, his best friend and group leader to a bunch of other orphaned children. When a terrible sickness spread through their group, he went to find medicine for everyone but himself, but when he returned, it was too late and Solo had died. He wanted so much to be with Solo that he said, "Your Solo so we'll be together as Duo", henseforth the name Duo.

When he was older, he stayed at the Maxwell church. Sister Helen wanted to cut Duo's hair because water was scarse and only used for drinking, so not a lot for bathing. Duo refused because this was the only thing he could own. Sister Helen, as a compromise, braided it and Duo liked it so much that he kept it that way. He went to school in robes given to him by the church and kids laughed at him, saying that he smelled like a sewer. He would get into fights because of this and often put other kids in the hospital. Duo questions the existance of God because orphans like himself exist and if there was a God, he wouldn't be an orphan. The only God that he can identify with is the God of Death because he's "sure seen lots of dead people". Then one day, colony soldiers trying to capture the base at point G2 took refuge in the Maxwell church, using it as a headquarters, a place to heal and a place to hide. When the soldiers kept hurting Sister Helen and the father, Duo decided that he would get them the one mobile suit that they needed in exchange for the church back. He took off to find the Mobile Suit and when he returned with it, the Alliance came and attacked the church, killing everyone inside including Sister Helen. After that, he meets up with Professor G who he takes Deathscythe from to go to Earth and battle the Alliance and Oz. The rest, is Gundam Wing history...
