FREDERIC KANOUTE: PLAYER PROFILE

Former French Under-21 striker signed from Olympique Lyon in May 2000 for £3.75million after impressing on a three-month loan spell at Upton Park.

The 23-year-old became an immediate hit with the Hammers faithful when he scored the winning goal on his debut for the Club against Wimbledon in March 2000, although his performance that day was somewhat overshadowed by Paolo Di Canio's Goal of the Season effort.

The departure of Cameroon midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe in the opposite direction released the funds to purchase Fredi at the end of the season and, despite suffering a hamstring injury early on last season, he went on to grab 14 League and Cup goals during a difficult campaign for the Hammers.

The subject of constant transfer speculation for the past year, Fredi was linked with moves to Chelsea and Rangers last season and reported to be heading to Fulham this summer.

However, despite suggesting that he would be interested in a move if the offer of Champions League football came up, the pacy striker has insisted that he is happy at Upton Park and looking forward to the season.

However, a hamstring injury sustained in a friendly against Stevenage ruled Fredi out of the start of the 2001-02 Premiership campaign.
