Gateway A device or process that connects networks with different protocols. See
Bridge and Router.
GB (Gigabyte) A unit of measure consisting of 1000MB.
GBps (Gigabytes per second) A performance measure used for mass storage devices
and memory systems.
Genlock A standard for video-capturing cards that refers to the ability of the
card to capture a single unique frame of video, rather than
"sampling" pieces of adjoining frames.
Gflops (Gigaflops) 1 thousand million floating-point instructions per second.
GCR (Group Coded Recording) A hard-disk term for a storage process where
bits are packaged as groups, with each group assigned to and stored under a
particular code. Used by RLL drives.
GiB (Gibibyte) a unit of measure consisting of 1024MiB.
Gigabyte Approximately 1 billion bytes of data (actually 2 to the 30th
power, of 1,073,741,824 bytes).
GOPS (Giga Operations Per Second) In the case of multimedia processing, more
GOPS translate to better video quality.
GPF error(General Protection Fault) A Windows error that occurs
when a program attempts to access a memory address that is not available or is
no longer assigned to it.
Graphics accelerator A type of video card that has an on-board processor
that can substantially increase speed and boost graphical and video
performance.
Graphics Coprocessor Similar to a math coprocessor in concept, a
programmable chip that can speed video performance by carrying out graphics
processing independently of the microprocessor. Graphics coprocessors can speed
up performance in two ways: by taking over tasks the main processor would lose
time performing and by optimizing for graphics. Video adapter cards with
graphics coprocessors are expensive compared to those without them, but they
speed up graphics operations considerably. Among the coprocessor's common
abilities are drawing graphics primitives and converting vectors to bitmaps.
Green monitor A monitor that is designed to conserve energy by
using such techniques as sleep or doze mode.
Green Standards Standards that mean that a computer or device can go
into sleep or doze mode when not in use, thus saving energy and helping the
environment.
Ground mat An antistatic mat designed for electronic workbenches
to dissipate static electricity. It often uses a wire attached to the ground
connection, in a standard electrical outlet.
Ground strap An antistatic wrist strap used to dissipate static
electricity. Typically grounded by attaching an alligator clip to the computer
chassis or to a nearby grounded antiststic mat.
Group files Windows 3.x files with the .grp file extension that
contain information about a program group and related programs; program groups
are displayed in Program Manager.
GUI
(Graphical User Interface) A user interface, such as the Windows interface,
that uses graphics or icons on the screen for running programs and entering
information.
