Light Emitting Diodes (LED) are special diodes which emit light when a current passes through it in a circuit.
They are frequently used in electronics to indicate whether a circuit is closed or not. Inside of every LED is a
semiconductor chip located in the bulb. This chip is basically a PN-Junction. The two wires
under the bulb indicate how the LED should be inserted into a circuit. The shorter of the two indicate the
negative lead which of course should be connected to the negative terminal of the power supply. (The negative lead
can also be indicated by the flat side of a bulb). The schematic symbol for this component is shown above, beside the title.
