BERTRAND BURGALAT
"Sunshine Yellow"
Record label: Emperor Norton
Format: 12"
Release date: 15 October 2001

Bertrand Burgalat wears many hats (producer, composer, remixer, record label owner) and has been described on Emperor Norton’s Web site as a “renaissance man.” Sheesh, another one? Every French male artist since Gainsbourg has been described as a renaissance man, particularly when marketed to the lowly Yankee (we may not be refined, but we’re not completely stupid). Nonetheless, Burgalat ties together some polished work. “Sunshine Yellow” is part surf, part electronics with swell vocals from Joanne Colan (MTV Europe personality). “Aux Cyclades Electronique” is the audio soundtrack for a lovers’ lounge made spicier on Tommy Hools’ remix. His version adds a change-up in the beat’s emphasis, giving the track a funkier edge. Still, nothing beats the fuzzed-out sensuality of “Kim.” This cut alone could justify the lofty reputation that this man currently has.
