Accent Modification
Everyone has an accent.
Your accent was shaped as you listened to, learned and produced your first words
and continued to be sculpted as you mastered your primary language or languages.
Every language has a specific set of speech sounds used in that language. Although
languages may share commonalities in their written form, the sounds may vary to a
significant degree, if only slightly. This difference is what constitutes a person’s “accent”.
Having an accent is not actually a bad thing. Your accent says a lot about your identity
and life experience. It is something to be proud of. It doesn't have to get in the way
of your communication ability. In fact, there are many public speakers who speak with
an accent and do not struggle to make themselves understood by a diverse audience.
On the other hand, if you feel frustrated during conversation or find that others seem to
misunderstand what you say, you may benefit from making a few adjustments to your
speech production.
As a licensed Speech Language Pathologist, I am highly qualified to provide analysis
and instruction in speech sound production to address your needs.
