CHAPTER 1 - An Introduction To Communication Systems & Networks

Home Page...... Contents Page

A communication system is a system that communicates with other systems. Any system consists of an input, a process to be carried out, and an output from the process. A computer system on the other hand also contains a storage section. Below is a diagram of the basic explanation of a system.

Communication means to send a message. Communication involving computers means to send a message between computer/computer's. This communication contains three elements, which are Sender (Tx), Message, and Receiver (Rx). This means that a message is transmitted (sent) and then received by the other computer or computers. Below is a diagram of communication.

Below is an example of the different ways you can communicate using either manually or electronically.

A Communication System is a computer, which communicates with other computers, which are connected to it. Two or more computers can only communicate with each other if they are connected via a network. A network is where two or more computers are linked up together. These computers can be linked up so they are either of two types LAN or WAN. LAN is the acronym for Local Area Network. This type of network is used for networks, which are done over a small local scale. These Networks are used in sites, campuses, towns and states. A Local Area Network uses cables to communicate between computers, and NIC's (Network Interface Cards), which are used, with a LAN so each computer can use the card to connect a cable into and then link the cable to the other computers inside of the network. A prime example of a network would be a college network. A Server LAN is a Local Area Network which has a Sever attached to it for which is used for the controlling the network. This server is a main computer, which sorts all of the other computers out in the network. A Peer-to-Peer LAN is a network, which consists of only a few computers and doesn't contain a Server. Below are some examples of Server LAN and Peer-to Peer networks. A workstation is a computer, which is linked up to a network

A PC LAN is a Personal Computer Local Area Network. Microcomputers are used in a PC LAN and this is explained below. This network consists of Microcomputers. Below are the different types of computers there are: Microcomputers are called this because they have a small chip inside of them to process all of the information. This Microchip is called the CPU Central Processing unit and is like the brain of the computer, this is used to process all tasks, which need to be processed by the computer. These types of computers are used in homes.

A Mainframe is like a big version of a CPU. The mainframe is like the brain of the network and does all of the processing to little computers called terminals. These terminals are dumb because they cannot think for themselves, as they don't have a chip inside of them. The Mainframe part of the Network is used for the processing and the terminals are simply just a monitor, keyboard and mouse for which input and output can be done with.

Mini computers are just smaller versions than that of Mainframe computers. This network uses the same principle where the Mainframe does processing and the Terminals do the input and output. Super computers are computers used by massive organisations for doing very big tasks like number crunching. This type of computer has a lot of storage space and is used by people like NASA. WAN is the acronym for Wide Area Network this type of network is used over a larger wide scale and uses telecommunication for the information to go from one computer to another computer. Cables would still be needed with this type of network to link to the telecommunication. Wide Area Networks are used World wide for example the Internet. The Internet can be used from anywhere in the world and uses the PSTN Public Switch Telephone network to transfer information from main computers, which hold web sites to any computer which, has internet access.
