This is me now... Isn't the dog cute? |
I am from Uzbekistan, which is one of the newly independent states of the former Soviet Union. I was born in Nukus, the capital of Autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan. Karakalpakstan is located in the Northwest of Uzbekistan and is well-known to the world thanks to (if one can use this expression in this case...) the Aral Sea ecological catastophe.
Aral Sea problems have changed lives of many Karakalpaks like me. After the collapse of the Soviet Union it became obvious that without international organizations it would be impossible to solve the ecological problems of the region. However, the biggest problem turned out to be incorporation of the best of western and soviet ecological practice. After studying at Moscow State University (Department of Zoology of Vertebrates and General Ecology), I decided that I should learn how western countries deal with environmental problems. That is how I wound up studying environmental policy at SPEA.
ABOUT ME AND THE ARAL SEA
My name is Ajiniyaz Reimov and I am a graduate student at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) at Indiana University, Bloomington.
