Zombie: Reign of Terror FAQ & Other Need To Know Stuff

Zombie: Reign of Terror is a freeform play by email (PBeM) role playing group (RPG).

What does this mean?

A PBeM RPG is a role playing game that is played via Internet email. It is a cooperative story telling effort where each participant (player) creates and controls one, or more, of the characters in the story. The player then writes about the character and their interactions in the game environment.

In this case the setting is a variation of our world which is becoming overrun by the living dead.

Zombie: Reign of Terror PBeM uses the SmartGroups list server. Once approved, you will have access to the site. Please use the following abbreviations when not posting for your character. OOC-out of character. OT-off topic and out of character. We do maintain a separate site for these correspondences.

You are expected to post at least 3 times a week and we cannot stress this enough although the more you post the more enjoyable the game will be for all players. The game is currently composed of players who usually maintain this posting rate with ease. If you do not feel that you can post this often then PLEASE do not apply to this group. Save us the time of getting to know you and then having to weed you out because you can't keep up!

That said, all people will have times throughout the course of the year where they cannot abide by this schedule. In such cases, PLEASE post an OOC note that you will be out of town or otherwise occupied. This is a courtesy to the moderators and the other players in the group so that they can best manage storylines while you are gone.

This is the only time a non-game post related OOC post will be allowed on the gaming list. If you have a habit of not posting regularly, the moderators may put you on moderated status, or even remove you without warning. If you have a reason why you're not posting regularly, email the moderators and they will be able to make allowances.

You may NOT write on behalf of another player character. You cannot write with certainty the actions or words of someone else's character. Instead, write as much as you can for your own character and then tag the other player for their own character's input, or even better... email them a draft of your proposed post so that they can read it over and add their own character's interaction before it goes out to the entire group.

This kind of teamwork is very much encouraged and makes the email sim a lot more fun. Collaboration in this way (particularly on dialogue posts) helps to keep email spam to a minimum. Doing a combo post can really help for a long dialog between a couple characters as the rest of us will be able to keep up and a potentially important piece of dialog doesn't get lost when the posting gets crazy.

PLEASE use a spellcheck on your posts. We don't mind the occasional spelling error, or lousy keyboard, but too many makes it difficult to read posts.

Feel free to post photos/graphics/artwork, and files related to the setting to the IC board. You must have the moderators permission to advertise another PBeM game to the group.

Above all else, remember that this is a GAME, and have FUN with it! :)

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Q: 'I'm a new player and am having a little trouble figuring out how to get started. Should I start a new thread or write myself into an existing one? What do you suggest?'

A: You can begin either of those ways. Your character could happen upon a thread already in progress if it were taking place in a location that your character might logically find himself or you can begin your own thread and throw out a tag so others could join you. If you're still stumped on an idea, just give a yell to the group and someone'll help you hammer out an idea.

A good way to try to get interacting with other players is to just do a post where your character is in a central location within Zombie ROT and leave it open ended where anyone who is interested could pick up on it. Tag any. Your character could be dodging Zombies in the park or trying to escape from an infested buiding, etc Or you could contact one of the other players and coordinate the beginnings of a thread WITH them. We know that some of you like to discuss threads with fellow players that way ... Anything works for us, we're open to hear any ideas.

Also, to make it a little easier for veteran players to notice a new character jumping into the game, put ('character name' intro) somewhere in the subject line. That way we immediately see that it is a post from a new player and can try to grab the thread quicker.

Q: 'What is the timeline in Zombie?'

A: The disaster is set a couple of months ago ... our time. Sometime during the night, zombies have arisen and are attacking the living. No one knows how, or why, this happened. What few survivors are around are starting to band together for safety.

Q: 'How does the timing and synchronicity of player posts work in this particular PBEM?'

A: We try to keep things roughly happening in the same gameday, but there is times when this can't happen. If a new day is called, or the time of day has changed, just roll along with us

As long as you can keep your characters mingling, that's more important than just being a stickler for exact gametime precision.

Q: 'How much control is allowed a player on their own thread? For instance, should a battle/fight/conflict come up with a group of NPC's, do we, the players, handle the scene ourselves or does there need to be moderator involvement?'

A: Players handling minor NPCs like a 'disposable' human or a small group of NPCs ... any character which really has no major bearing on the outcome of a thread, is perfectly fine with us and actually helps free up our time for other things which we consider to be of greater importance.

Q: 'But what about a conflict involving multiple PC's? i.e., One group of survivors against another group and zombies all around us.'

A: With a PC involved in the conflict (and in this case more than one, and controlled by multiple players), we think it would be best for a moderator to handle the NPC's in question to avoid any conflicts of interest or the possibility that a player handled the NPCs in a way that the other PCs in the thread didn't like. If you are ever in doubt about when it is or is not appropriate to write on behalf of an NPC, just ask.

Q: 'I got an email mentioning an event from another thread I'm not involved in, what does this mean?'

A: All this is, is us letting you know of a major event that happened in another thread. It is our way of informing you of an event that your character could see, hear or smell from his/her location regardless of his/her involvement in the thread or not. You do not have to go out of your way to answer an Event Notice but it is something you should be aware of.

Q: 'The character limit is 3 characters. That's quite a few characters to play and do I have to have 3 eventually?'

A: The limit of 3 is just a rough cap. Some players are able to play a dozen characters in a game, others aren't. Whether the reason is online access or the ability to juggle the character personalities in their head easier doesn't matter. We prefer you start off with one character and play them for a while before requesting to add an additional character. If you feel confident that you will be able to handle multiple characters ... great! Demonstrate that in your posts to the game and we'll go from there. If you get tired of playing a character, but don't want to kill them off, you DO have the option of writing them out for a time. Do let the moderators know about this in advance. Please be courteous and have all the threads that character is in resolved before putting them out to pasture.
