Title: An interesting study session. Time: Sunday, April 11, 2004 The Thespians: Toby Darling and Pascal Curio Location: Mundainger Biology - Twisting Passage and Allis Memorial Center - Library Notes: Hahaha Toby yay! <3!
+---[ Mundainger Biology - Twisting Passage ]--------------------------------+ | | | Anything but straight, even the very floor of this stone passageway twists | | upwards and downwards along with the walls, making it impossible to see | | more than ten feet along it before one's vision is cut off. Almost | | randomly the hallway branches off in a few places, the divisions unobvious | | and easy to miss. One large, heavy wooden door with a frosted pane closes | | automatically behind students; the faint, muffled sound of birds chirping | | can sometimes be heard through the door, marking it as the Aviary's | | entrance. | | | +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ |
Toby Darling seems to be in a pretty good mood today. He's humming as he walks along the twisting corridor. His backpack is in its usual place on his shoulders as he runs his hand along the wall- partially to keep his balance on the somewhat uneven floor. Amazingly, he looks like he actually knows where he is /and/ where he's going!
Not exactly in the best of moods, but in a better one than usual, Pascal Curio comes striding down the twisty passage going the opposite direction of her 'new friend' Toby. She's looking off into space, her bag slung lazily over one shoulder, and eyes clouded over as she thinks. Her strides are quick and long, carrying her to her next destination without much time delay. Unless she should walk into Toby, seeing as how she's going to, if she doesn't move.
Fortunately for the both of them, Toby isn't quite as spaced out as Pascal is right now. He stops just before the two collide and side steps her. "Hey, Pascal. How's it going?" Yes, he's being nice to the girl who has hit and hexed him more than everyone else at school combined.
"Toby." Pascal responds with a less than friendly greeting. Can you blame her? She woke up the next morning with reality smacking down on her like a fat kid would descend on apple pie topped with whip cream. She has half a mind to keep on walking down the hallway, but for some strange reason, she stops in midstride and stares at Toby with her eyes narrowed. "I'm fine." A pause, and then an afterthough. She /should/ pose the same question back. "You?"
Toby is dumbstruck. After all that screaming and yelling the other day Pascal is being civil? And /polite/ to him? "I'm good. Just heading to the library to study for charms." (No, he hasn't looked at his charms textbook lately.) "Where are you off to?"
Fighting the urge to smirk at Toby's mention of charms, Pascal only allows an inward chuckle. "Away," she comments smoothly, adding in her mind, 'From you'. She tilts her head to the side and slides her other arm into the other strap of her pack. "Where's your study buddy Lien? Didn't see her in the library, and I would have never figured that you'd go there if she wasn't." And now, the waves of sarcasm swell.
"I haven't seen Lien in a while, actually. I guess she's been too busy studying." It's true, Toby /hasn't/ seen her in a while. Funny that it took this long for him to notice. "And I do go to the library on my own sometimes, you know. Remember when you did... whatever it was you did to the Orb? I was there alone and then all these weird people showed up. And you showed up too." Apparently he's trying to say that Pascal's not weird. Even though she is.
"Uh huh. Right. Maybe you were just out of your mind that day in the library, just like you were out of your mind the other day," Pascal continues on, barely able to keep the venom out of her voice. Her eyes flash and then it grows clear that she probably doesn't want to keep it out of her voice. She crosses her arms in front of her chest; she's not going to make this easier for Toby, as she takes a step back from him and waves her arms in the direction he was heading. "Well, won't be stopping you from studying charms now. Off with you." Shoo. Shoo.
"I'm not out of my mind, Pascal." Toby is still keeping it friendly and upbeat. He's trying not to give Pascal any ammo. "Alright. I'll catch you later, then." And he's on his way again. That was quick and painless.
+---[ Allis Memorial Center - Library ]--------------------------------------+ | | | An immense area stretches out both upwards and horizontally. Squarely | | shaped, the library is carpeted in speckled blue and gray, except for a | | five-foot strip extending around the walls, which has been tiled in | | reddish tan and light russet squares. In these areas shelves reach upwards | | to thirty feet overhead, spaced apart by long, one-foot wide windows. | | Periodically a large wooden ladder is visible, should one wish to risk | | their neck for one of the dusty volumes perched so high. Occupying a space | | near the front wall of about twenty square feet abound round oak tables, | | supported by four thin legs and surrounded by chairs with blue cushions. | | The rest of the room holds what must be hundreds of bookcases, all packed | | with books of old and new, various sorts separated into labeled cases and | | those placed in similar sections. | | | +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ |
Here's hoping that Pascal Curio beats Toby to the library. She quickly snakes her way into the room, and then ducks behind a bookshelf, avoiding glances from other students. There were actually quite a few students in the library, but unfortunately not as many as she would have liked. At least, there weren't enough studying charms. Concealed behind the bookcase now, Pascal just waits for the entrance of Toby.
How on earth did Pascal beat Toby Darling to the library? Toby enters quietly through the door and finds a table nearby. Tossing his backpack onto the table he pulls out a chair and sits, plopping into the chair. He pulls his wand from his belt and sits it on the table next to his charms textbook that he has just pulled from the bag. He opens the book and... Darn it, he forgot his parchment and quill. He shuts the book followed by more digging in the bag. There, he pulls out his quill and parchment and them both carefully on the table. Back to the book now. He opens it and... "ugh." How on earth can he write without his ink? Shuts the book again and rummages through his bag for his ink bottle. It gets found, opened, and set upon the table. At this rate Toby won't get any studying done at all!
She knew it! Without the super studying powers of Lien Nguyen, Toby would be rendered USELESS in his studies! Except, Pascal's got a very short attention span, and she's already growing slightly bored by watching his studying preparation antics. Otherwise known as procrastination. So much bored so, in fact, that she slumps against the bookshelf with a grunt, glaring at a passing student who needed a book from her side of the shelf. She darts a look over at Toby again, and well, just waits.
Okay, Toby is ready to actually study now. The book is open and he's reading. He's reading some more. And a bit more. And a little more and... -thud- He's done it again. He's fallen asleep on his book. At least this time he's not snoring... yet.
Looks like all of Pascal's espionage is slowly paying off, though from her extremely relaxed and slouched stance by the bookshelf, it would appear that she's about ready to fall asleep herself. The thud is very soft and Pascal didn't quite hear it, but she was staring at Toby the whole time, even if her eyes glazed off at a point. The green optics clearing up now, she quickly scans the bookshelf for the fattest book she can find. 'One thousand and one wizard songs from Merlin to Weezer' would have to suffice, and quickly Pascal sneaks over to Toby, raising the book high above her head with every single intention in the world to bring it smacking down on the table where Toby is. Potentially getting herself in trouble, but she doesn't care. From where she's standing, she looks like some evil axe murder about to smash Toby's head in though.
-CRASHBANGBOOMTHUD!- Toby awakes with a start and a bit of a girlish yelp. He hasn't been asleep long, but its long enough to get one of those little red spots on his forehead. He frantically looks around him for the source of the noise and sees none other than Pascal Curio standing beside him. He doesn't notice that there's an extra book on the table, but he assumes anyway that it was Pascal that did it. "/What/ in the name of Merlin did you do that for!?"
"What, I can't pull a good practical joke on my /friend/?" Pascal lets that slide out rather silkily as she pull out a chair, perching lightly on it. "I've bought you some /good/ reading, Toby. Look. One thousand and one wizard songs from Merlin to Weezer." She smiles enigmatically. "What in the name of Merlin did you think /you/ were doing?" Her voice darkens somewhat, but mirth lights in her eyes. "Defiling the library with your sleeping. I ought to report you." Insert the patronizing finger wave.
"I can't help it! Every time I try to sit down and study I get really, really tired. Lien caught me napping last week." Toby rubs his eyes and his forehead. He can /feel/ that red mark up there. "Except she didn't yell at me... wait a minute. Weezer are wizards?" He snatches the book from Pascal. Apparently this is good news to him.
"Yes Toby. You're going sit place your head on the cover of the textbook, and then magically, the words will absorb into your brain. You'll be an instant genius. Bottle up your results and become a millionaire at the tender age of 12." Pascal rolls her eyes and tilts her head to the side, not quite done yet with the sarcasm. She opens her mouth so say more, but her expression only fills with disgust as Toby takes the book from her possession. And so, she raises her hand with every intention of giving him a slight 'whap' on the back of the head to WAKE UP.
-whap- Of course she actually does whap Toby. Why wouldn't she?
"Wake up. Smell the roses Toby. You've got finals looming around the corner, and you're reading about..." Pascal has to take a look at the title again. "Weezer? What the hell is Weezer?" She gives her head a shake and just changes the topic. "Get your ass over to a bookshelf, drag down a charms book, and /study/." She actually just wants him to open the book and see that there's no writing in it.
"But... I /have/ a charms book. Why do I need another one if the exam is on the stuff in this one?" Well, so much for not giving Pascal any ammo, Toby. Not putting up a fuss seemed like a good idea. Oh well, let the fussing start again for now. "See? My notes right here from Professor Moriarty's class last week: 'all exam material will be from the textbook.'"
"Moriarty is a fu--" Oops. "Funny man," Pascal manages to finish, her eyes wide. Funny in a you-creep-get-away-from-me way. Pascal takes a look towards the charms bookshelf and tries another tactic. Which probably would have worked wonders on Lien, but she's not as sure with Toby. "How do you know he's not going to give you extra credit marks? Bonus marks on the final? Bonus marks that he'd only give out to the /smart/ kids. You know, the ones who took initiative and read /outside/ of the textbook." Right. "Besides, you might need those bonus marks to keep yourself from failing, Toby." Sarcasm on, sarcasm off.
"I think you've got me confused with an over-achiever." Toby doesn't care as long as he passes. And, now that he took the time to sit down with Moriarty to work on his engorgement charm he's not afraid of failing anything. "I don't need extra credit. Would you let me study already?"
"Fine. Study. I'll just sit here and stare at you. /Friend/." (Pascal)
Okay, that's creepy. Pascal just said the word 'friend.' "Why aren't /you/ studying, Pascal? Don't you have exams, too?" Toby doesn't look back down at his book quite yet. He instead fixes his gaze upon Pascal and her stare.
"Now's not a good time to be studying for me, thanks." Pascal carefully examines her fingernails and then laces her fingers together on top of the table. She takes a look at his book, and then a good look at him. "Why're you talking to me? Study!" She tilts her head to the side and smirks slightly.
"Okay, okay. I'm studying." Toby is going to give Pascal what she wants. He flips a few pages in his book, reads a page or two, and makes some notes. He repeats this process a few more times. He doesn't speak and he doesn't look around. Amazingly, he's now beaten his own record for staying awake while studying.
Pascal's started drumming her fingers rather idly on the table now, and not really wanting to disturb Toby quite yet (that would come in good time), she takes that song book away from Toby and starts to flip through it herself, hmming rather loudly and annoying at inopportune times. In fact, her hums are so ill timed it's really hard to determine when one would just erupt from her system.
Toby continues his flip, read, scribble rotation. In reality, Pascal is driving him absolutely crazy by sitting there beside him, but he's doing his best not to show it. 'I can't let her know she's getting to me,' he thinks softly to himself.
"Toby!" Pascal takes his opportunity, right after another badly timed, 'HMMM,' to now interrupt his studying. "Toby! Did you know at the drummer for Guns 'n Roses is actually a wizard?!" She pauses and looks at him as if she's suddenly discovered the secret of immortality or something. "I had /no/ clue! This book... is so exciting." And then she flips through it, falling silent once more, save for the 'HMM's.
"Really?" Toby hardly sounds enthusiastic. He doesn't like Guns 'n' Roses. Makes the same hand gesture that baseball umpires make to signal a home run. Pointer finger in the air making small circles- it's usually accompanied by a 'woo' when it's being used sarcastically, but Toby leaves that one out. He goes back to reading his charms book. This time it's he who unexpectedly exclaims something. "Pascal!" He goes wide eyed and grins. "Did you know that... oh, never mind. You probably don't want to know anyway."
Interrupted in the middle of a particularly throat satisfying 'HMMM,' Pascal narrows her eyes at Toby, but quickly the mask of innocence, and I'm hear to listen to you replaces that. "Hmm? What? Did you find a charm to place boils all over my face? Maybe a charm to switch the location of my eyes and my nose?" She leans closer towards Toby, still idly flipping through the music book.
"Um... no. But that eyeball switching one sounds pretty cool. I'll have to see if I can look that up." Toby goes back to reading. He's really, really, really trying to drive Pascal crazy here... it's just not working today. Perhaps he needs another plan.
"Are you /sure/ you don't want to read one of the charms textbooks in the library? I mean, you never know when they might have that exact charm." Pascal nods all too enthusiastically and returns back to her own book, muttering something about musicians enchanting their instruments and being big fat frauds. "Jimi Hendrix. He's rumoured to be a wizard, Toby." Pascal nods. "I can believe it. He probably charms his guitar to high hell. All he has to do is hold it and it plays itself."
"I've got plenty of time for that after finals." Toby closes his charms book and stuff it into his bag. The same goes for his ink bottle (which he actually remembered to close this time), his parchment, and his quill. He slides his chair out from the table and tosses his bag onto his shoulders. "Look up John Denver while you're reading that, Pascal. I think he's a wizard, too. They're the only people that could make songs about West Virginia do so well." He lets a goofy smile wipe across his face. "You have fun reading that and not studying for exams. I'm going to head back to my dorm where I can read in peace. Catch you later, buddy."
"John Denver... hmm. Maybe," Pascal continues distractedly, watching Toby pack up his things out of the corner of her eye. She's debating on whether or not to act extremely sad that he's leaving, or just to, not care. Settling with the latter choice, she gives him a half-hearted wave, still staring at him from lowered eyes. "Study hard, Toby. Don't stress out like Lien. We don't need two of her." Or two Sukakus guarding the two of them, for that matter.
