Title: The Orb of Wonder Time: Monday, March 15, 2004 The Thespians: Jaden Sheen, Toby Darling, Dragon (Kaelyn Silverleaf) and Pascal Curio Location: Allis Memorial Center - Library Notes: Pascal didn't join the scene until later, but I've decided to include the entire scene in the log. @lastposes is the best command EVAR.
| +---[ Allis Memorial Center - Library ]---------------------------------------+ | | | An immense area stretches out both upwards and horizontally. Squarely | | shaped, the library is carpeted in speckled blue and gray, except for a | | five-foot strip extending around the walls, which has been tiled in reddish | | tan and light russet squares. In these areas shelves reach upwards to | | thirty feet overhead, spaced apart by long, one-foot wide windows. | | Periodically a large wooden ladder is visible, should one wish to risk | | their neck for one of the dusty volumes perched so high. Occupying a space | | near the front wall of about twenty square feet abound round oak tables, | | supported by four thin legs and surrounded by chairs with blue cushions. | | The rest of the room holds what must be hundreds of bookcases, all packed | | with books of old and new, various sorts separated into labeled cases and | | those placed in similar sections. | | | +-[ Exits: ]------------------------------------------------------------------+ |
Jaden Sheen walks into the Library from the main doors he is tall for his age with short black hair and he is holding a list of sorts in his hands, with his head down seeming to think to himself, He is also whispering something about "Where is that book" and without looking begins to head for the bookcases
Nose buried deep in his transfiguration book (is that the only class this kid studys for?) Toby Darling is sitting alone at a table in the back corner of the library. The contents of his backpack are scattered across the round table: rolls of parchment, ink bottles, books, a pencil or two, his wand, and a blue, baseball sized orb kind of a thing. Toby has a small, mostly healed, cut across his forehead.
Sitting on a heavy footstool on its haunches, err her haunches? His haunches? Is a small Dragon, who currently has its elbows propped on a large table and is idly reading on a book as the creature keeps its tail curled around and under the table as it idly taps the tip against the floor whilst perusing through the pages.
Jaden Sheen moves to the bookcases still not looking, once wonders how he doesn't run into the bookcases or if he has and has just memorized where they are now, but he disappears between a row of books and finally begins to search though the books still whispering to himself.
Looking up, briefly, Toby catches a glimpse of a dragon sitting on a stool across the library. A what? A dragon!? Oh, wait. He knows that dragon. He waves, hoping to catch her eye and says, just loud enough to be heard but not loud enough to disturb folks "Hey, Kaelyn!"
Dragon looks over the top of her book at Toby and blinks before offering a wave "Hallo Toby" She replies in kind and then head tilts "What are you up to today?"
"Where is that Stupid book!" can be heard from the aisle of books as books can be heard falling then someone saying "Be quiet!" (Jaden Sheen)
Toby calls back over to the dragon "I'm not up to much. Just studying." A chorus of "shhhhhhhhhhhhhh" is heard from all sides of Toby. "Sorry!" He forgot, he's in a library. So, rather than being rude again, he picks up his belongings and stuffs them all into his backpack and moves his camp over a few tables to the one next to Kaelyn. He tries to peer over her shoulder to catch a glimpse of what sort of book she's reading, but that's rather difficult as her shoulder also has a wing attached to it. "Not much... Whatcha readin'?"
Dragon turns her book around "Potions. We got a new Potions Professor and she can be a real witch." (Drumroll please) She then sighs and shrugs "Some Russian woman, I can barely pronounce her name and only when I have to be near the woman. And she's bigger'n I am when I'm like this!" she's now shsshed, though not quite as loud and of course she gets an evil stare from the librarian "Sorry!" she's shusshed again and sighs. "Anyhow, watch out for her."
Jaden Sheen walks out of the Aisle with four books in his hands then begins to move towards a table then finally notices the Dragon sitting on the table then without any warning shrieks and slips on the floor spilling all his books on the floor, I mean theres a dragon sitting in the middle of the Library and no one seems to notice.
"I heard about her. I haven't had her yet. I don't have potions till tomorrow." Toby sniggers. "Is she really as fat as they say she is? I mean, if she's bigger than you are..." He stops. Whoops, not how he wanted that to sound. "I mean, not that you're fat. But you're a dragon. Dragons are big. Yeah. Not fat."
Dragon blinks at the shriek and then blinks and nods at Toby "Aye, I'm obviously not fat." she says and looks at the shrieking person and then blinks again and perks a bit as she hears the chorus of shhhshing louder than the shriek was "Least I didn't do it that time. Hallo." she says to the boy with the pile of books.
Still looking at the dragon he hurriedly gathers his books and ignoring the Shhs quickly walks off to another table (Jaden Sheen)
Toby turns and looks over his shoulder at the book-dropping 6th grader. "That was worse than me. At least I didn't run away." Toby says with a chuckle and a smile. (See? Smile again. Kid can't do anything but, it seems.)
Whistling, in the library? It couldn't be, but it is. Pascal Curio actually has somewhat of a smile on her face. It doesn't make her look anymore pleasant, but it is a smile, no matter how eerie of a smile it is. Her lips are puckered and she saunters into the library still whistling. The chorus of 'shhhhs' that follow her entrance are matched only by a rather harsh glare and a look that clearly says, 'BITE.ME.', for the whistling doesn't silence. In fact, it gets slightly louder and more shrill.
The Dragon smiles cheerfully at Toby before speaking with that prim and proper English accent of hers "No, you simply leapt high enough that you left your shoes on the ground and I think you screamed like a little girl." and taking on a bit of a playful teasing tone as she does so. The Dragon looks over to Jaden curiously and points out "Umm, I'm Kaelyn, Local Dragon Animagus, anyhow I don't bite, detention's too long."
Realizing that the Dragon is talking he finally realizes what he is even before he announces himself and seems to calm down a bit then says "Excuse me, you just startled me you where the last thing I expected to see in the library" (Jaden Sheen)
"I did not scream like a girl!" Toby's voice raises in both volume and pre-adolescent pitch. More 'shhhh'ing noises. He lowers his voice again and tries to keep it in more of a 'manly' tone. Unfortunately, 11 year olds cannot have very manly sounding voices. "You almost landed on me. How was I supposed to react?" Toby knows full well that Kaelyn was nowhere near landing on him, but he has to save his manliness /somehow/.
The whistling dies, drowned out by Toby's little squeaking voice. Pascal raises an eyebrow, interested, and slowly moves closer towards both the dragon-student, and the child-yet-through-puberty. She gives Jaden a quick glance, just noting that he's there, but doesn't say much. The 'shhhs' are really getting to her though, that last chorus directed at Toby perhaps being the loudest. She makes a rather obscene gesture towards the 'shushers' and remains quiet with a smirk on her face.
Dragon looks at the gesturing girl and tilts her head curiously for a moment, she then grins at Jaden cheerfully and of course showing lots of teeth "No problem, I'm sure it's the last thing many people expect to see here, it's why sometimes it's quite fun just to come here and try and study like this. Keeps everyone on their toes." she replies and again grins cheerfully before looking like Toby "Of course you did, and might I point out, that I was no where near landing on you. B'sides, I'm not the best at landing on shifty terrain and I don't want to crash." She then grins and offers a wink. "If you'd like I can change back."
Satisfied Jaden Sheen opens one of his books and taking out some parchment and a pen from his backpack he begins studying, which is what he mostly does these days.
Toby turns to the shrieking kid with a smile. "I'm sorry, I don't think I've met you. I'm Toby... you are?" He'd extend a hand to the boy, but he's a few tables away. Toby doesn't have extendable arms.
Turning back to Kaelyn, "No. Don't change. You're more fun as a dragon. It's fun to see people freak out when they're not me." Toby returns the wink.
"Listen to him," She jerks her head towards Toby. "I'd say stay a dragon. Keeps everyone on their toes, and keeps them all from turning into frigid pencil-pushing nerds," Pascal drawls, finally opening her mouth and saying something. Her gaze is directed rather lazily at either the Dragon, Toby or Jaden. Nevermind that they've barely even looked at her, she doesn't really care to be asked to speak. Interruption always seems to be the best anyway.
Dragon shrugs, then nods, before offering a smile to Pascal. SHe then erks and yawns quietly, long tongue curling before she closes her book. "I think I am going to have to call it a night and retire."
Jaden Sheen Looks up as Toby speaks with him then seeing his arm he gathers his things then places them on their table. Jaden then takes Toby's hand and says "I'm Jaden Sheen, I'm surprised we never did meet I'm usually in here every other day." Then places his books aside to listen in on the conversation.
Turning briefly and staring at the girl who interrupted Toby squinches up his eyes as if to say 'who are you?' but he doesn't say anything. Turning back to Kealah he puts on his faux-macho voice again: "Boo on that. Did I scare you off or somethin'?" Toby realizes the odds of a 5 foot something 11 year old scaring off a dragon are pretty slim, but it's fun to say anyway. Toby acknowledges the boy who just walked over and shook his hand, but doesn't really say much more than giving a nod. Too many people!
Pascal Curio cocks her head to the side and wiggles her fingers pretentiously at Kaelyn. She mocks Toby, mimicking his scrunched up facial expression, before giving the boy a rather obvious wink. All this done while she still has the smirk on her face. She's fallen silent again, but has moved closer to the table where the three of them are.
Dragon tilts her head and looks between the younger students here, before again yawning "I Guess I had better see about curling up in a bed... I'm sorry I have to go and whatnot... cherio." The dragon then puts her stuff into a backpack and attaches it to the back of her harnes and begins to wander toward the door, moving on all fours like it's all natural and whatnot.
Jaden Sheen nods towards the Dragon as she departs then says "Well I have quite a bit of studying to do before I also head to bed, Nice meeting you all" Then moves back towards his table and again takes out his parchment and pen and begins where he left off.
Toby catches the return funny look from the abrasive girl. He ignores it. Turning back to the dragon: "Bye, I guess." Toby pauses for a second, a slightly mischevious look on his face. He tries to replicate Kaelah's British accent: "Cheerio old chap." He can't exactly do accents. That's why it's funny. The shreiking kid is taking off too. Toby waves to him. He'd actually say something if he knew the kid better, but he's not really in the mood to.
Aww, how nice of the two of them to leave just Pascal and Toby together, amongst the rest of those annoying 'shusher' gits. The teenager takes this moment to slide rather gracefully into a seat right across from Toby, her emerald green eyes fixed on his face. Her own face has a rather bemused expression on it, her thin lips quirked at each corner into what could become a rather annoying smirk. Let's see him try to ignore her now.
Yeah, this is a bit uncomfortable. Toby pulls his things back out of his backpack one item at a time. Wand? That goes there. Quill and ink? Over there. Parchmen... .oO("she's staring at me, isn't she?")Oo. Parchment... there. Baseball sized blue orb thingie, right there. Transfiguration text book... held up right in front of his face.
Oh, what's this? One of these things doesn't belong with the others. Pascal's eyes widen slightly and she finally tears her gaze from Toby's face, eyeing that blue orb that he's just pulled out of his bag. Her left arm moves underneath the table very slowly, and quick as lightning, her hand darts out towards the orb. Of course, she doesn't know what it does, or what it could do to her, but curiosity is curiosity, and sacrifices must be made in order to irritate others.
"Hey! That's not yours!" Toby catches the snatching hand from the corner of his eye and tries to swat the girl with his book. He's not quick enough, though. -mean face-
"Owww, come on now, guv! Aye just wanna 'ave a look!" Pascal winks at Toby again, her accent rather good but still annoying none-the-less and his book barely missing her hand as she darts for the orb. Her fingers brush it ever so gently, but she doesn't take it into her possession. She's touched it to be sure, but she hasn't realized that she's pressed the little red button on the side of the orb. Her hands retract away from the object and she mimics his mean face.
A fine grey mist floats out of the orb's many, many pinprick sized holes with a barely audible "pssssssssh" sound. Toby looks up at the girl with a smirk. "Well, what were you expecting? Explosions? Disease? A burning sensation?" All in all, Toby doesn't really look too concerned about the button pressing.
"Would have been a lot more bloody exciting if it did blow up or at least inflict some pain." Pascal looks rather disappointed, though it's probably quick to turn into frustration. Her green eyes narrow and she just /glares/ at the mist floating out of the orb. "What the hell is that thing good for if it doesn't inflict any pain?"
"It's for protection. It's very useful if you're out in the forest with the evil creatures. It's a magical creature repellant dispenser. One of the 10th graders in my hallway loaned it to me so that I could go treasure hunting in the /bloody/ forest." Toby emphasizes the "bloody" a bit, perhaps mocking the girl who tried to steal his orb of wonder.
"Right. Protection from magical creatures. Repellant. Please." Pascal's words drip heavily with sarcasm and she rolls her eyes both at Toby's use of the word 'bloody' and at his description of his little magic 'orb of wonderment'. "You expect to get protection from the creatures in the forest from... this?!" She practically spits out her last word, and quick as a flash, her arm is there again, darting towards the orb. This time she's actually wanting to take it into her possession, but for reasons unknown to anyone but herself, as her right arm slips into her robes, searching for something within her pockets.
Reaching for the dispenser... reaching in the pocket. What to do, what to do? .oO("Is she pulling something dangerous out of that pocket?")Oo. Quickly, Toby makes a decision to either protect himself or protect the dispenser. He chooses himself as he quickly picks his wand up off the table and points it directly at the girl across the table. Obviously on edge, Toby quickly mutters "What are you doing?" He knows full well that she's at least three or four years older than he is and could likely wipe the floor with him with any one spell or jinx, but he's running on instinct here.
"If I wanted to hex you, I would have done so earlier, and have shrunk your nose and enlarged your teeth so much you would have resembled an ugly fat beaver," Pascal says rather stonily. She hasn't flinched at Toby's quick movement and reflex, but her hand has stopped reaching for the orb. She reveals her right arm from within her robes to show that she, as well, has her wand. "Put your wand down." Her voice is quiet, but it contains a strange feeling of command. Not a question, Toby. A demand. Her eyes are flaring up, and her face is flushing.
Toby Darling crinkles his eyebrows at the girl again. Slowly and reluctantly he sets his wand down as he accepts the reality that this girl could kick his butt with a wand. As sternly as he possibly can in the situation he requests of the girl as he gestures toward the repellant dispenser: "Please don't steal that. I promised I'd take good care of it."
"If I wanted to steal it I'd have done that a long time ago too." Pascal can't help but smirk at Toby. "Sit down." She reaches for the orb and picks it up carefully, looking at it for a moment. "If you're going to protect yourself from creatures in the forest, a little mist isn't going to scare them at all. Repellent or not, I can bet you that if they're hungry enough for a little student sandwich, no repellent is going to stop them." She taps her wand against the orb once, and stares at Toby. "Do you follow what I'm trying to say here?"
The orb stops misting. How'd she do that? "Err... no, I don't follow." Toby looks confused as he has a seat. "But the guy I borrowed it from... did you say 'student sandwich?'" Toby gulps. He hadn't exactly thought about the idea of being eaten. Attacked by something, yes. Eaten- not so much. "Why would something want to eat me? I'm just... just..." Go on, Toby, try to explain why some vicious creature wouldn't want to eat you and your "slight bit of extra padding around the midsection."
The orb is held at Pascal's arm length, and at her eye level. She holds it in front of her so that the orb blocks her sight of Toby, and then shifts her arm to the side and focuses on the boy's rather... anxious expression. "I'm sure you've been in the forest. You don't strike me as the type to have the control to stay out of a place that's known to have challenges and dangers." Another smirk, and she taps the orb again, thrice this time." She places it back on the table, and rolls it towards Toby. "There. All you need to do, is tap it once with your wand, press the red button, and throw it."
Toby picks up the orb, and eyes it suspiciously. "How do I know you're not tricking me?" He raises an eyebrow at the orb charm casting girl.
A cross between a scoff and a snort escapes from Pascal's lips as she pushes herself up from the table. Her wand is tucked safely back into her robes again and she taps the side of her long nose, winking again at Toby. "That's the beauty of it. You don't." She laughs darkly and runs a hand through her hair. "Do I even need to repeat what I said earlier about hexing you and stealing from you though?" She looks almost scholarly as she waves her hands around. If she wanted to, she'd have done it already. "Have fun with that thing. Let me know how it goes." She starts to walk out of the library, but then turns with another smirk. "And in the future, don't give up so easily. It makes you look weak." She's referring to his willingness to put his wand down, and sit down after being commanded to do so. But allowances will be made on his part, after all, he /is/ dealing with Pascal Curio.
