What is WML?

WML is a free HTML generation toolkit for Unix, internally consisting of 9 independent languages. The main idea of WML is a sequential filtering scheme where each language provides one of 9 processing passes. So WML reads an input file, applies passes 1-9 (or optionally only the passes specified) and finally produces one or more output files. For maximum power WML ships with an already written set of include files which define additional higher-level functionality. The same way you can write your own custom HTML tagsets for WML to extend its functionality for your particular needs. So, whatever HTML tag you want (and WML not already provides), you just can program it yourself in Perl. WML is not a closed toolbox, its only the core upon which you can base your HTML generation environment. It operates as a powerful offline HTML generation toolkit for webmasters. While not trivial and idiot proof it provides most of the features real hackers always wanted for HTML generation.

This Program is For You When

...you are a real Webdesigner.
...you really create Webareas and not just single Webpages.
...your primary HTML creation platform is Unix.
...you love the idea of HTML generation.
...you hate the HTML code of WYSIWYG editors.
...you want to use favorite programming features.

3 Reasons why WML is used with WAP

  • Transfer speed
  • Size and readability
  • Navigation

  • Most cell phones and Web-enabled PDAs have data transfer rates of 14.4 Kbps or less. Compare this to a typical 56 Kbps modem, a cable modem or DSL connection, it seems ridiculous. Most Web pages today are full of graphics that would take an unbearably long time to download at 14.4 Kbps. Wireless Internet content is typically text-based in order to solve this problem.

What is Necessary to view WML

A WML browser is necessary and is included in WAP capable devices. You can download various WAP browsers/emulators. Some can be model/maunfact. specific eg. the Ericsson R380 Wap Emulator.Others can be for general browser usage like:

M3Gate - wap browser that works on 95/98/NT as an add on to Explorer or Netscape and launches automatically when viewing a wap page

Winwap - wap browser that works on 95/98/NT/2000 and can browse WML files from hard drive or Internet

Still others are called Opera and of course Wapsody!

What Are some sites that use WML

The world of technology is slowly accepting and complying with WAP. Many companies that are aware of the growth of WAP and it's convenience are creating WAP compatible sites to compliment thier own company's website. Some sites that Use WML are Yahoo and Google. Through the Yahoo WAP site, you are able to check out many of the cool yahoo features that you access through your HTML browser. Things like current events, weather, horroscope are just a button away from your finger tips. Google provides a WAP page search engine and is effective in it's searches. There are also many financial sites that use WML Enabled pages to allow mobile users to do their financial tasks on the go.
