Intelligent, loyal, brave: Harry Potter's best friend of the feminine persuasion is one tough cookie, and sharp as a tack to go with it. She often functions as the Trio's voice of reason when Harry's reckless bravery and Ron's utter loyalty drag them into a variety of escapades... but cross her at your peril.
Harry and Ron are truly dear to her, and she values their friendship as if they were the brothers she never had. The unconditional acceptance as part of the trio is important to her, and her over-achiever nature has served her well in the many extra-curricular adventures she and the boys share.
As Muggle-born witch, and an academically-inclined young woman, Hermione works hard in all her classes to consistantly prove herself. She's earned the top marks in her year for the last four years running, and gained the equivelent of an extra year of age due to the use of a time-turner... as if she weren't already somewhat isolated from her classmates for being too mature and sensible.
But, deep down, Hermione is growing a little tired of being just 'the smart one', and always doing the right thing, the proper thing. The boys have each got their own things to deal with now (Harry's relationship with Draco, Ron's grief over his sister's death), and, while Hermione will support them however needed... she wants something of her own to hold onto.
