Controversy
Also Known as My Opinion
This page is where I talk about things I feel, things I've heard, things I've seen, etc. I would like to stress that everything you see on this page is MY OWN PERSONAL OPINION and that I am in NO WAY responsible for what you do with this information, or for what your kids do with it for that matter; NOWHERE on this page or on this entire site will I attempt to force you to see things the way I do; just realize that this is how I feel, and try to understand. So, with that little disclaimer out in the open, let's begin.
Goth vs. Gothic
"Most goths become goths because they have been spurned by 'normal' society because the way they want to live their lives does not fit in with how most people are told to live theirs. Goths are free thinkers, people who do not accept the moral rules of society because they're told 'This is just how it is' or 'This is what God says!'. Rather goths tend to listen to what you have to say, and make up their own mind. This kind of free thinking and rejection of dogma earns only rejection in todays society."
While I most certainly allow the above writer her own opinion, I have to disagree with parts of her statement; while the Goth movement is a place for those who feel they don't belong in other sociatal groups, it is still an exclusive subculture just like the rest, and as free-thinking and open-minded as they may claim to be, most Goth's are as resentful and prejudiced as every other major and minor subculture in the world. Most of this stems from the fact that most Goth's have a dim view of what Gothic, the word Goth is derived from, really means. Goth is a bastardization of the Gothic culture, which was in itself a full-blown culture as opposed to a subculture; it had it's roots in the middle/dark ages, and it's architecture, music, and artworks are still with us to remind us of what it was and why it developed. At it's heart, the Gothic mindset is not one filled with shadows and dark thoughts; while a true Gothic individual may have thoughts leaning towards death and the dark ona regular basis, this is not intended to glorify in the darkness itself; rather, the true Gothic uses his/her understanding of death and what it means to color her actions, thus giving her a more profound and appreciative view of life. Thus, Gothics use death in order to celebrate life. Most Goth's, on the other hand, revel in the bleackness of their lives, or what they percieve to be so, and ignore the real truth behind the Gothic mind; thus, they stagnate, never becoming wholly aware of thweir world and remaining cut off from the outside; and while they may like it this way, they are only dooming themselves to more of the same ridicule and prejudice that prompted them to begin the Goth movement in the first place. Many of them allow themselves to be rejected so that they may vindicate the way they feel; paranoid and distrustful of others, they never move beyond their own cliques. So the cycle continues.
Kids and Smoking
I don't know about you, but frankly, I am disgusted and wholly irritated by the "Truth" commercials shown on televison these days about kids and smoking. While it's all right for these people to have an opinion, and while I admire their attempt to save the youth of this nation, I must disagree with their methods. I feel that they are not simply trying to get a point across; they are forcing their opinions down the cerebral cortex of the masses, and this behavior is known Peer Pressure; the same tactis that tobacco companies supposedly use to sell their products, these people have adopted to spread their own message. These people need to realize that the tobacco industry is one targeted at adults; I for one have never seen a cigarette ad that featured children smoking. These kids that are smoking are not doing so because the tobacco companies forced them to take their product; they are doing it because of severa; reasons most likely unrelated to the companies themselves. They see their parents doing it, so they try it. Or maybe their parents stress time and again not to do it, so they try it just to find out what the fuss is about. What "Truth" needs to come to accept is that these kids are making up their own minds about smoking; nobody is holding a gun to their head, a razorblade to ther wrist; they make the decision themselves. It's all part of the learning process, so let the kids learn on their own; they have enough to worry about without you pushing your own propeganda on them all.
