The Hierophant

Drawing the Hierophant suggests that you are struggling internally with two equal urges. Both urges seems to be of equal value and of equal potential benefit; however they are at cross-purposes. You need to develop an objective mental state, a means of separating yourself personally from the issues at hand, so that you may better evaluate your choices. The Hierophant sits over his two followers, providing guidance from outside their range of awareness.

The image is of a priestly man, seated upon the throne. The three figures actually represent the individual. The two lower figures are the spiritual and primal drives within us all, while the third figure is the higher self, recently discovered through the Emperor. The Hierophant, while guiding the two supplicants, is actually looking at the observer, perhaps to provide guidance to the individual as well.

The structure of the image is that the triangle of spirit formed by the figure of the Hierophant resting upon two circles, representing the solar and lunar discs seen developed in previous images. These discs are the separate but equal and opposing forces in our lives. Thus, the Hierophant is the spiritual objectivity we each need to develop to properly manage these two cross-urges. The traditional meaning of this image misses the point of the structure, simply suggesting a counselor or the need for counsel.
