This is the result of my latest obsession: fantasy. Upon hearing about my love of Hobbits, a friend asked "So, how long will THIS last?" I hope my love of magic, legends, mythic creatures and heroes & heroines will last a long time. Here you will find my tribute to the wonderful creations of J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit and The Silmarillion.

According to The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien, Laurelin is one of the Two Trees of Valinor, the land of the Valar in the East. She was destroyed but her golden fruit, Isil, survived to light the sky with the golden brilliance of her past. She is the Sun, the light of the world that all life depends on. Her brother is Telperion, whose flower became the Moon. Alce laurelino means the light of Laurelin in Quenya, one of the Elven languages invented by Tolkien.

In Laurelin I find my entry into Tolkien's world so dominated by men and male figures. Though she now disappeared into the myths of creation in the memory of the elves who sailed to Middle-Earth from Arda, Laurelin's legacy lives on. Her radiance were put into the precious Silmarils and from her remains emerged the Sun. Instead of living in the shadow of the Moon, as the Female is so often linked to, Laurelin stands golden and bright.

The light of Laurelin is holy and archaic. Yet, with each new sunrise she emerges renewed with life. Thus, in this section you will find the new light of Laurelin in Eowyn, the unsung heroine of the Third Age, and the archaic light in the wisdom of the Istari and the Great Rings.
