"This is so not working," Cordelia said as she looked down at her boyfriend.

Who was writhing around in agony on the floor.

She reached out a helping hand. "Here let me help-"

"NO! No," he said quickly as he rolled away from her and closed his eyes as he waited for the pain to subside.

Never in his whole bloody life-

"Well you gotta admit that its my best move so far. If a demon or vampire ever tries something, I know a knee to crotch will drop them like a sack of potatoes."

Rupert focused on the little white dot in his mind. The little white dot that was slowly becoming smaller as he counted to 100 and the pain began to subside from feeling as if someone shot a cannon ball into him to merely someone hitting him with a crowbar.

At this moment the thought of siring children was a fantasy at best. He didn't know if he could even walk properly again.

The woman had practically hobbled him.

"Giles-"

"Don't touch me please," he hissed as he felt her behind him. He instinctively rolled further away from her and protecting himself as best as possible. Despite his warning he felt her warm hand gently slide down his arm to grasp his wrist.

"I told you this was a bad idea-"

"Teaching you a little about defending yourself was not a bad idea. Kicking me in the-Don't touch me, I said"

"Well you said show me what you can do. I told you what I could do and you were like no-show me and I did!"

"Well you're demonstration-Ow!"

"Will you stop screaming? How can I help you if you're acting so-"

"Cordelia. I love you. But you can't help me right now. Just leave me be. Please. Just-"

"Fine. I'll leave you here to writh in pain while I get an ice pack, a heating pad, and some Ben Gay. Hopefully one of those will do the trick."

He winced as she got up from the floor and went off in search of the useless medicinal aids.

Right now a blow to the back of the head would be the most help.

Lord, what had he been thinking? Trying to teach Cordelia self-defense moves?

Stupid, stupid, stu-

He grimaced.

No, not stupid. Good. A good thing. The right thing considering everything. The last thing he wanted was for her to be caught unprepared in a situation that she could have a chance of getting out of unharmed if only she knew some simple basics of self-defense. She was deep in a lifestyle that necessitated her knowing the basics. Much as he wished it weren't needed.

He sighed and opened his eyes, his eyesight flush with the floor so that all he saw was the back of the couch.

"Okay," she said as she returned to the room. "You're still on the floor."

"I'm still in pain," he replied.

He felt her sit down behind him. "Giles, after all those hits to the head- THIS is what keeps you down for the count? This doesn't bode well for those nights when I get a little rough and frisky."

He turned to glare at her scathingly and was rewarded with a bright smile.

"At least you're looking at me now."

He rolled away from her again with a grimace.

"Are you mad at me or simply annoyed?"

"Neither," he replied. "I'm...recovering."

"I said I was sorry-"

"I know."

"I told you that it wasn't a good idea. You should have-"

"Listened. Yes I know," he finished.

" I have ice cream," she finally offered after a moment.

"Ice cream? What does ice cream have-"

"To help with the pain silly. You're out of ice, and its gonna take a while for the water to warm up for the hot water bottle-"

"You want me to hold a carton of ice cream against my-"

"Well its better than nothing. Do you wanna continue to lay there in pain?" She reached over to place the carton on ice cream in front of him, when he quickly took it from her and cradled it against himself.

He supposed that he deserved this. Afterall he was fool enough to stand right in front of her and tell her to kick him.

And people thought him to be rather smart.

"Rupert?"

Oh no. No no no she called him Rupert. He could be consumed by flames and he'd still feel all warm and fuzzy at the sound of her voice saying his name.

"I'm really sorry."

He carefully rolled over, making sure to keep the ice cream carton firmly in place as it was providing some relief and would provide a means of protection from any unwanted action directed at his crotch. Resting on his back, he looked over to see her looking down at him with a concerned, frown, apology written on her features. He didn't miss the hidden glint of humor lurking in those eyes, but he recognized the apology.

"I know," he finally said. " I know...I...I should have listened to you."

"I tried to warn you-"

"That you did."

"It was bad idea asking you-"

"No. It wasn't. You should know more about protecting yourself. And you do have some good instincts and....moves. You just need to learn a few more and perhaps learn a bit more finesse. While your knee and heel to the groin works extraordinarily well in subduing an assailant, you'll need to know how to wield a weapon in the cases of a demon or vampire. "

"Well I know how to use a stake and a crossbow, but my axe and sword fighting skills aren't-"

His eyes widened unavoidably and she quickly amended her statement.

"I'll ask Gunn to show me some stuff. Or Wesley. I don't mind hurting them."

"No, no, no. I'll....be happy to help you. Later. When I'm able to-"

"Giles, you nearly passed out five minutes ago-"

"Yes and that just shows that you aren't as hopeless as you make yourself out to be-"

"I never thought of myself as hopeless. I mean I'm no slayer or army geek, but I think I do okay for an ex-cheerleader, May Queen, normal teenaged girl. Well mostly normal."

She paused to look down at him, his expression lighter than it had been moments before. "What?"

"You do 'do okay for a normal teenaged girl'. You do okay with a lot of things."

Her eyes softened, the guilt and concern melting away into a shy smile as he reached out a cold, clammy hand to take hers.

"Especially with the kicks. Which not including the current situation, I do belive to be a good thing."

"Well remember I did use it on Ethan Rayne once. Sent him down too."

"Well now I feel a little better," he said.

He looked up at her face, watchful and unsure, unreadable. Finally she leaned over and kissed him gently, stroking his face a moment before pulling back to look at him with a hopeful smile.

"Feel better?"

He smiled. "Yes, a bit more-"

He grimaced and tightened his grip on the bucket of ice cream, pressing it to his newly throbbing crotch.

Good Lord was he in a bloody awful predicament.

The tea kettle sounded from the kitchen and they both looked up.

"I'll get the heating pad ready," she said, kissing him again before sprinting up to the kitchen. He turned his head upwards, watching as she walked into the other room, her lithe body moving gracefully, her fragrant hair swinging in its ponytail, the warmth in her eyes still filling him-

He winced again and pressed the carton of ice cream closer still.

Lord he loved that woman. He loved that woman beyond reason.

It was the only way he could explain why he was smiling and still be in so much pleasurable pain.
