"Hello,"
"Oz. Hi. How's it going?"
"It's going very well. Happy birthday, by the way."
"Thanks. You remembered."
"It would be kind of hard for me to forget. Get anything good?"
"A lot of witchy stuff. And CDs from Buffy and Xander. Clothes from my
mom, who hasn't noticed yet that I gave up the fuzzy sweater routine a
couple years back."
"Moms. Otherwise sounds good. So, how are you doing?"
"It's kind of hectic around here. You caught me at a q uiet time."
"Good timing on my part then. What's the hectic?"
"We're facing off against a god."
"Evil, powerful, wants to destroy the world?"
"Wants to get back to her own. Destroying ours is just kind of a fringe
benefit."
"Hmmm. How goes the fight?"
"Mixed. She's about as tough as Wonder Woman, with a crappy disposition.
But she can't perform the ritual she needs to perform without something
she calls âThe Key,' and she's had no luck finding it yet."
"And you're trying to find it first?"
"Worse. We know where it is and she knows we know."
"I'm surprised she's not going the terrorist route, then."
"Kill us until someone coughs up the info?"
"Yeah."
"We're surprised, too. But Glory , that's the god's name , isn't the
brightest bulb in the socket. Think Harmony in a REALLY bad mood."
"Hmmm. Need an extra body?"
"You're volunteering?"
"Don't sound so surprised."
"Oh, I'm not surprised that you'd volunteer. You're one of the last true
knights out there."
"Thanks. So, why the surprise?"
"Well, um, me and Tara . . . your anger management issues . . ."
"Got that under control now. Remember I told you my life was going
well?"
"Yeah ,"
"Part of that's this new band I'm in , it's called Blue Oysters on
Wednesday."
"What are you called the other days of the week?"
"You know what I meant."
"Yeah."
"Anyway, we're kind of Stray Cats meets Dido."
"Oooh, bizarre."
"Yeah, we thought so. But we're kind of popular here in Philadelphia
right now. There are five of us , me and Karen on guitar, Darrin on
bass, Ward on keyboards and Jamie on drums , she also songs lead. We're
having fun. Doing a west coast swing soon , Devon arranged it. You
should stop up and see us."
"So you got yourself a new band. Great. You said that was only part of
it, though?"
"Yeah. The other reason is, well, Karen."
"You've found someone."
"Yes. She's great. Funny and very strange. Cute although she doesn't
think so herself. Kind of Janeane Garofalo-like."
"You always did like her. That's great."
"You don't sound completely happy."
"I am. What doesn't sound happy is natural, I think. You were the first
real great love of my life."
"And you, mine."
"So I think a little sadness is kind of natural. But I am happy. Believe
me."
"I do. So, do you need me?"
"Not right now. If we do, though, we'll tell you. It might get to the
point where we need everyone we can get. Until then, stay, be happy,
enjoy yourself. Do the band thing. But Oz ,"
