And in the End…” Part IX

Brett meant it. He really did. He really was going to do it. Even if he got mad, he was going to keep his word and work through this. He was determined to get his family back, no matter what it took.

Brett picked Kim’s shirt up off of the floor and handed it to her. She took it from him and put it back on.

"So, you’re really going to do this?" she asked as she fixed her collar.

"Yes, really. If I was with some other girl I probably would have just screwed her, left her and then did it again and again. But since I hooked up with you, you made me realize what I was doing was wrong. Well, I knew it was wrong, but I kept doing it, probably because no one had ever told me no before. So, thank you."

"You’re welcome," she happily replied. "I’ve done something good and I’m glad it was to help you."

Brett threw his shirt back on and checked his hair in the mirror.

"c’mon," he said as he put his arm firmly around her, "let’s go to a club."

"But don’t you need a body guard or something? I mean, everyone is going to notice you and want autographs."

"Well," he said while smirking, "I don’t mind. I’m going to have my family back, there’s nothing that can ruin that. Unless Lisa wont take me back, but I guess I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it."

Kim and Brett went to a local club that night. They were escorted to a VIP section and only bothered by a few fans and Brett was happy enough to sign autographs and chat for a few minutes. His attitude had completely changed from earlier that night.

He and Kim chatted for a few hours, telling past stories and getting to know each other. Then, it was time for them to say goodbye.

"Thank you again," said Brett before he stopped onto the bus.

"You’re welcome."

"Would you like my cell phone and page number so we can keep in touch?" asked Brett.

"That would be great. And I’ll give you mine. I’ll also give you my address, so you can keep me updated."

"Ok, I’d ah, give you mine, but right now I’m living in an apartment and I don’t know if I’ll be getting back with Lisa, I don’t want to get my hopes to high. So, we’ll wait and see what happens, ok?"

"Ok, but I don’t have any paper or anything on me."

"There’s some on the bus. Come on in," replied Brett.

Brett opened the door and stepped on, followed by Kim, and like always, they sat, waiting for him.

"Brett, I’m sorry about everything," said Kevin at the first sight of him. "it’s your life and I shouldn’t try to tell you what to do."

"Yo dude," said Brett with a little laughter in his voice, "it’s ok. We’ll talk about it later. But I wanted you guys to meet Kim. No, I didn’t screw her. Well, I did before, but not tonight. It’s a long story and I’ll tell you about it, but right now I need a piece of paper so I can give her my number."

"Right here," said Carl, as he pointed to the table that held three letters. A letter to Kevin’s wife, Robyn, a letter to Carl’s wife, Mikayla, and a letter to Jeff’s wife, Shauna. Brett thought of his letter that should be there, but it wasn’t.

He grabbed a sheet of paper and jotted down his numbers. She took the paper from him, ripped his numbers off and wrote down her address and numbers. She handed it to him and then said goodbye, wishing him luck and making him promise to keep in touch.

He promised her he would and he promised her that he would go through with getting help. He didn’t want to live like a monster anymore, because that’s what he felt like. He wanted to be a husband to his wife and a dad to his son.
