He dropped out of an alternative high school at age 17 to do stand-up comedy. He met Kevin McDonald at an improv class at Second City Comedy. They soon became friends. Both were employed as movie ushers, while they worked together on building up a comedy troupe.

On December 31, 1991 he married Tabitha Southey whom he met at a bar when he was 20 and she was 17(born 1966). They were arguing about whether or not the lead singer of the band playing there was any good. They have two children, Edmund (called Ned) Southey, born in 1991, and Basil Patrick Southey, born in 1995. Dave and Tabitha divorced in 1997.
