Safety Guidelines
These safety tips aren’t supposed to be a punishment, they’re supposed to protect your loved one. Don’t gloat over them and act as if you’re grounding somebody. And don’t tell her that she’ll get her “privileges” back once she’s gained a certain amount of weight.
Get all the laxatives out of the house.
Lock up drugs, especially with bulimics, who are sometimes also drug addicts since they have difficulties with impulse control.
Take out the trash every day. Mia will sometimes make bulimics root through trash for their food to punish them for “disobedience” to her will.
Keep physically ill people away from her. Her immune system is crap right now and if she got a flu it could kill her, no joke.
Sleeves need to be rolled up at the dinner table (make this a rule for everybody, so that she doesn’t feel singled out.)
The family dog should be kept away from the dinner table.
Plants should be kept away from the table.
Limit TV to material that reinforces positive body image or makes no spoken or unspoken insinuation about preferred body types. (If all the women on the show are thin, and/or fat people are only brought in for comedic relief, then it's not a healthy show.)
No fashion magazines.
Eye her friends carefully. Anorexics in particular have recently been trying to band together at school to support and compete against each other in their self-destructive lifestyle.
Make sure the family computer is in the living room, where you can monitor to make certain that pro-ana sites aren’t being visited.
Stand outside the bathroom to monitor for vomitting. If you hear vomitting, enter the bathroom and sit with her. There's a more detailed account on how to help her in this situation toward the bottom of this page.
After using the bathroom, ask your bulimic to wash her hands in the kitchen instead of the bathroom (again, it’s best if this is a family rule.) This way she can’t so easily use the sound of the shower or the sink running to disguise her vomiting.
