The Causes of Bulimia
Solely bulimic girls are unlike anorexics in many ways. They are generally unassertive and somewhat under confident, but are otherwise normal and well-liked. Bulimics, being somewhat low in the will power department, do not have a very strong ability to control their impulses, sometimes manifesting itself in stealing, drugs, violence, promiscuity, and other bad judgement. They generally first attempt anorexia, but find themselves unable to lead the strict and regimented lifestyle, so they quickly turn to the binge/purge cycle. The bulimic generally stays at a normal weight unless coupled with anorexic behavior. According to Peter Rowan, "The Bulimic group seem to be slightly less obsessive and to be marginally more mature in emotional development. They are more likely to have boyfriends and to show their feelings."
Food is associated with love and nuturing, a connection that was made from infancy during breast feeding. In the binge eating of a bulimic, the key here is the overwhelming, gnawing hunger for love, love of any kind - bulimics are sometimes even known to eat out of trash bins in order to feed the compulsion. (Bulimics often carry this over into their sexuality as well - their craving for love is so intense that they may take the most meager and evil form of what they may be able to identify as love, but which is usually only lust.) The bulimic quickly realizes that with the weight gain of their binge, they may become fat and hence unlovable, so they throw it up.
