Medicine Signs
By Sandy
As I was getting ready to leave Wisconsin to move west to Oregon last summer, I realized that I had procrastinated about visiting the white buffalo and if I moved I may never see her. I tried to get all my friends to plan a trip over there together but they weren't all available at the same time so I just went with the first friend that could make time. The farm was in the middle of nowhere and I'm not sure how anyone would find it if it didn't have such a strong energetic draw. I expected a big Wisconsin dairy farm but it was really more like a hobby farm that sprang up behind a row of rural houses. As you drive up the driveway you start to realize how special it is...there are Llamas and Emus behind the fence on one side and miniature horses on the other. Exotic breeds of chickens and ducks run everywhere. We stopped the car by a long metal building that housed the gift shop. This gift shop was unpretentious and held a sampling of the gifts that people have tied to the fence of the pasture where Miracle resides. Inside the shop we also met the woman that owns the farm and her elderly father. I spent about an hour talking with the woman, asking all the things I could about her experience at the center of this spiritual gift. She expressed herself as a common and modest Wisconsin farmwoman...she worked part time as a janitor to help make ends meet. She wasn't so sure about all this Spiritual stuff but with time she was starting to wonder because so many people claimed to be healed after visiting the farm. When we asked to see the Buffalo, her father offered to drive us out to the pasture in his golf cart. When we got to the pasture she was intertwined in a cluster of three other buffalo, the grandfather tried to point her out to us but they were far enough away that you couldn't be sure who was who; one of the other females was her half sister. It seemed to me that one in the cluster resonated differently than the others so I fixed my attention on her. I thought to myself that the day was hot and there didn't seem to be any breeze to comfort us, which reminded me of something I read about the buffalo...it always faces into the wind. We listened to the grandfather tell stories while we watched Miracle. He spoke of all the ceremonies he had participated in on the farm and things that had been gifted to him because he was the respected elder. After a while I felt drawn into just being there and stopped scrutinizing things...looking for the hidden meanings. Then I began to notice that the Buffalo had all stood up...almost in a formation...I laughed to myself "They are all pointing in a different directions...the wind must be blowing from all sides now" Then it dawned on me...they were making the sign of the medicine wheel! At that moment the others that had gathered on the grass along the fence stood up and gasped saying out loud what I heard inside. Later, after I got home I spoke of this to my other friends and one insisted that we go back on the next weekend. We went and spent the day in a shady spot talking with the grandfather...he opened up to deeper spiritual discussions and after a while he called Miracle over to the fence...she trotted forward as if she was a puppy. Then...just for us, she rejoined the other Buffalo and created the Medicine wheel formation again. This was so much more than I expected and I gasped and commented. The grandfather said, "Yes, I've seen her do that just one other time...last week" I pointed out that we had been there last week and seen her...he said, "Oh, was that you?" "Well, I guess that she recognizes you then" Now...this next part may sound crazy... When I got home that day I emailed a friend that knew I could speak with animals when doing healing work with them. He asked me if I had tried to speak with Miracle and I told him that it had never occurred to me to try. That night I closed my eyes and traveled to her pasture in spirit. I found myself slowly approaching her...I asked her if I could approach her or would I frighten her? She said, "No, the spirit people never frighten me." We spoke a while, I knew her foot was injured and asked if I might offer some healing...she was very gracious and accepted the healing. She spoke of the grandfather but called him "Brother" and all during our time together I was struck at how feminine her energy was...almost as if it were the purest feminine expression of energy I had ever felt. I did think to ask her why she was there...what her purpose was and I'm not sure if she misunderstood my question or if I just didn't understand the answer...she said her purpose was to take care of the family that takes care of her...that was all...or maybe she was just saying, "Love is all there is".
