Born of Man and Woman Additional Diary Entries

This was an assignment for C.C. English. We had to write two more entries for the Diary of the person in Born of Man and Woman by Richard Matheson. I'm sure the entries will make much more sense if you have read the story, but here is a brief summary if you haven't. Basically, it's this kid locked up and chained to a wall in a basement and he is telling what happens to him. He has relatively no grammar or punctuation, and talks in the manner of someone who knows only a very little bit of english. And that's pretty much what the whole short story is. So with that in mind, here are my additional entries (they come after the last entry in the story), or at least the last entry that was in our text book. (Written 2/19/02).

XX – This day the goldness not come. It gone. The wetness fall again. I did not like feeling dark. I hear mother and father laughing. Bad laughs, high. Lots clomping noise. Quiet. Big machine roll away. Now is scary quiet too long. I pull chain from wall. I go to the window and saw the wetness fall, drowning the ground. I feel bad.

This day no sound come back from big machine not return. When no wetness falling I hear upstairs and no sound I go. To the kitchen is quiet. No brightness. No laughs. No little mothers or fathers. Feel too quiet. No good. Icky scared in belly. I run down to basement and push chain back in wall. Lay still. Quiet.

XXX – This day new noises come. Mother no noise and no father noise. Different. The noises no laughs. Very soft kind. I all over shake. If new noises beat me I hurt them. I will.

Brightness falls into basement. I am still. If noises no see me, maybe they leave. I hear noises call. Sound like talk mother and father make. Brightness shines in face like goldness upstairs. Hurt eyes. I crawl back. Now new noises come from other mothers and fathers. They do not look like mother or father. They is different. They is nice to me. Pull chain from wall. Let me go happy. Take me to brightness. Upstairs. No dark feel scared. Cover eyes. Take me away in big machine that rolls. Don’t know where going. Maybe good. Maybe.
