Oxygen Pathway

This assignment was for Physiology. We had to write the pathway an Oxygen molecule takes upon inspiration and expiration. (Written 5/23/00)

Firstly, I was sucked into someone’s nose, along with a bunch of other oxygen molecules. We passed over the conchae and the mucous membrane covering it. In this nasal cavity we were warmed up by the blood, moistened by the mucous, and then cleansed of all the dirty little particles that followed us.

After this, we passed into the pharynx. We traveled down to the glottis and entered the area of the larynx. We could see the vocal cords as we passed, and the relaxed epiglottis. Then we could see the actual larynx, a triangular-shaped thing commonly known as the adam’s apple.

From here we traveled to the trachea, and on toward the lungs. We found ourselves going into the right bronchus, to the bronchioles, and finally to the air sacs. Now, a lot of my buddies went on through the alveoli, but not me. I was one of the few that just happened to be pushed back out during exhalation by the contracting of the diaphragm that compressed the lungs. Ah, sweet, fresh air.
