Welcome to the Queen Elizabeth Secondary School Home Page. This is written for students, parents, and staff at QE or any member of the community in Surrey, BC, and anyone in any other part of the world who is interested in looking at what QE is doing.

Surrey is in the Greater Vancouver area, situated approximately 25 km east of Vancouver, and is one of the fastest growing cities in Canada. Surrey is also known as the City of Parks.

Queen Elizabeth Secondary School is one of the public schools in School District No. 36, Surrey, BC. At Queen Elizabeth, we have a tradition of excellence. The school provides a comprehensive academic and general program for students from grade 8 to 12. Our student population is approximately 1500.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Thank you to the many parents who participated in the Parent-Teacher Interviews and Grade 12 Information Meeting on October 22nd.  Your interest
and support is important, noticed and appreciated.  This newsletter is timed to coincide with the First Term Report Cards and for grade 8 and 11 students the issuing of their individual results on last spring’s Foundation Skills Assessment for students in grade 7 and 10.

The second PAC Meeting of the year was held on November 12th and featured information on proposed changes to the graduation requirements.  Some of the
proposed changes include:

Requiring students to write comprehensive exams in Language Arts 10, Science
10, Social Studies 11, Mathematics 11 and Language Arts 12
Fewer Grade 12 exams and students would have the option of not taking grade
12 Provincial examinations
Each grade 12 student would be required to complete a Graduation Portfolio.
This collection of student work would be assessed by the school in six areas (information/technological literacy, critical thinking and problem solving, community involvement and responsibility, fitness and personal well-being, employability skills, and education and career planning).

The reasons for the change and a more comprehensive explanation can be found at the Ministry of Education website:
http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/grad_req_rev/

As part of the annual planning process a PAC representative attended an
information session on School Planning Council’s on October 21st.  Two QE
parents, selected by the PAC, will be attending a follow-up meeting on November
25th.  Two grade 12 QE students will also be attending an Educational
Stakeholders Forum at Fleetwood Park Secondary on November 18th.

In other news, congratulations are in order for a 2002 graduate, William Tsui. William is the recipient of the Governor General’s Medal for academic excellence.
This award, which is given to the graduating student with the highest academic
average in all grade 11 and 12 subjects will be awarded at this year’s Commence-
ment Ceremony on June 26th.

Congratulations also to Nickie Ellis, Brad Hart, Trevor Pella, and Tanysha
Robinson.  These students successfully completed the rigorous Ailanthus
Achievement Centre summer program.  Ailanthus will once again be offering
scholarships to QE students with an interest in academic success and a desire to
master a demanding performing arts curriculum.

We would also like to commend all of the students who participated on our school teams this fall.  In particular, the senior girls’ field hockey and senior boys’ soccer teams excelled and advanced to compete in regional championships.

Principal
