Diagnosis of Amnesia
Diagnosis of Amnesia
A doctor inquires about recent traumas or illnesses, drug and medication history, and checks the patient's general health.
Psychological exams may be ordered to determine the extent of amnesia and the memory system affected.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reveals whether the brain has been damaged, and blood work is taken to exclude treatable metabolic causes or chemical imbalances.
To diagnose Korsakoff's Syndrome, the doctor can ask simple questions such as the name of the president of the country. If the questions are not correct and the person has had a history of alcoholism, those are the first symptoms of Korsakoff's Syndrome.
