7. thisGIRL - 3/5/01
The wind of change is blowing, a chill creeps down the backs of the waiting masses and when the tension cant get more tense, someone shuts the door and the band go on. ThisGirl, playing the Paris Gate last Tuesday had drawn a large and very diverse audience. The word is out on these lads, next big thing, going places etc. A lot has been said about this Rotherham four-piece and its all true. The energy is breathtaking, the psychosis is unnerving and the Indian warcries are inspired. The punks in the audience loved it, the indie chicks loved it, the metalhammering goth types loved it and some loudmouthed towny who drives one of my friends to work loved it. When you hear them for the first time, you think yeah, I know this, its that nu-metal lark, but theres no rapping here and theres real emotion. They havent written these songs to get some bedroom dwelling poster chewing 14 yr old to part with their allowance on the pretext of being rebellious. They really are talking about their generation, unlike the bloated Hollywood mansion drivel that passes for cutting edge rock these days.
The whole nation will soon be pogoing along to the genre-imploding strains of ThisGirl as they go on tour in the summer and theyre recording their first single for Lockjaw records in August.
Speaking of record companies, a local based webzine has been mutating into a monolithic all powerful site covering every aspect of the Donny music scene. Armed With Pop incorporates columns written by various Doncaster music dignitaries and has now turned into a record distribution company. Offering singles, albums and demos for mail-order by the likes of Bunny, Brazil and Fake Ideal, Armed With Pop is also putting together its own compilations, including a charity record for the NSPCC. If youre interested you can drop them a line, order a record, read some comments on Donny, music, politics and post some of your own on the message board at www.armedwithpop.co.uk.
Visages Tuesday night venture Straightedge seems to be improving, plenty of great tunes and cheap drinks to be had. £1 admission gets you two free drinks and the music comes in a different order every week.
