96. Rebirth Part 1 (11/9/87)
Just as Optimus Prime predicted, every Decepticon in the universe has united to launch a devastating attack on Autobot City. Their objective: to steal the key to the Plasma Energy Chamber, the foundry in which the original Autobots were forged. They succeed in stealing the chamber, but in the process of opening it, twelve Autobots (led by Hot Rod) along with Spike and Daniel are propelled and become stranded on Nebulos; with a band of ten Decepticons (led by Cyclonus) close behind. During a fight, the Decepticon team captures several Autobots. The Autobots soon discover that the Nebulons have been enslaved by mentally controlled machines that work for “The Hive,” led by Zarak, and are desperate to break free. A daring plan is hatched to place Nebulons inside the Autobot bodies, transforming them into “Headmasters”, Transformers with greatly enhanced fighting capabilities.
97. Rebirth Part 2 (11/10/87)
The Autobots make their way to rescue their comrades, however, the Decepticons have struck a sinister deal with the merciless Hive. Bonding with Hive operatives, the Decepticons succeed in creating Headmasters and Targetmaster. Using their numbers, the Decepticons capture the key. Zarak then turns the Hive’s entire city into a new Decepticon superbot, Scorponok, the most powerful ever created! At that same time on Cybertron, Optimus Prime merges with the supercomputer Vector Sigma and discovered the deadly secret of Plasma Energy. The Autobots duplicate the Targetmaster technology with the remaining five of their number. An injured Cerebros informs the team of his discovery of a city. Learning the location of the lost Autobots, Prime set out for and arrived on Nebulos. Then led by Optimus, the Autobots attack the Decepticons in a desperate to recapture the key, only to meet the force of Scorponok.
98. Rebirth Part 3 (11/11/87)
The Decepticons secure the key and return to Cybertron on Scorponok. Galvatron has a giant engine move Cybertron close to Earth, then he uses the Plasma Energy Chamber to overload the sun, in an attempt to cause it to go supernova. The Autobots, except for Spike and Cerebros, head toward Cybertron in order to stop Galvatron’s plan. Spike and Cerebros stay behind as Spike convinces Cerebros to become a Headmaster and assist him. As the Autobots on Cybertron are defeated, a flying city arrives on Cybertron. Spike becomes Cerebros head, and in turn, Cerebros becomes the head to the city, Fortress Maximus, who defeats Scorponok. Spike and the Nebulons use the Plasma Energy Chamber to siphon the extra energy from the sun, infusing it into Cybertron returning it to a Golden Age. The defeated Decepticons flee off into space to hatch new threats…
