All [rl] stands for is a particular way of encoding video into the DivX;) 3.11a format
using NanDub SBC technology.

So far, it has mainly been Simpsons episodes have been encoded under this process, but
documentary-type video has been tested to encode well with it too.

[rl] encodes are mainly distributed via private donations of bandwidth and
HDD space through the #robotolabs DALnet IRC channel right now.  You can also probably
find some of them on the main DALnet simpsons channel, #simpsons-central too.

How to contribute.

New to IRC?  Well, it isn't just for chatting, thats for sure.  Try this site for an introduction to IRC
downloading, or click the yellow head on the links page for a pretty decent script.

[rl] encodes are in the DivX;) 3.11a video compression format, with MP3 audio, and are
usually ending up to be about 85MBs right now for a 1/2 hour episode.

If you don't have the DivX 3.11 codec yet, you can get it here.

Since we don't have a friend at the TV station, we have to wait for them to air
each simpsons episode, then capture them live off the cable TV.

If you ever wonder what will get encoded next, tv listings for [rl] can be found here.
Hit the top go! button.

They play simpsons during the week at 5:30 and 6pm on Channel 13,
on Sat at 10:30pm, and at 5, 6, and 8pm on Sunday.

If you are desperate to complete all the episodes from all the seasons very quickly, and don't care much
about quality, there is a P2P program called direct-connect that is worth checking into.

For anyone wondering about what goes into encoding DivX that makes them turn out OK,
there is a details page here, but basically, using the standard tools available (virtualdub and nandub) you just
keep trying different settings till they work.  The [rl] encoding process may turn out acceptable quality
DivX, but it is very slow to perform.  Even on a 1700XP processor, it needs at least 2 hours
of post-capturing proccessing time.

If you've ever wondered why some of the DivX episodes you've seen don't look very good,
it is true that some of the "divx" episodes out there are simply re-encoded MPG's,
which can never give quality quite as good as original DivX.

Quality DivX releases, however, also come from {abn}, [pb], [brakeyoself],
[cokehead], [tatanka], [jayvenomx], [wobler], [TE] [zr], [Yo-Yo], and [crazy-diamond], to name a few.

A little-known fact about all [rl] encodes is that they each have a very small
watermark running the whole time in the lower right part of the video.  It is a RGBY color
bar that alternates with time.
