Introduction

Researching on the Internet using databases and online libraries can be a rewarding experience. This webquest provides each student an opportunity to research a contemporary topic such as the origins of the Internet as well as research Maritime U.S. ships and their Captains.

This webquest is primarily designed using group collaboration and activities. Knowledge of Powerpoint is assumed in completing the activities of this webquest.

 

Tasks

Step 1 Form a group of three for this activity. Visit the Internet Society Website. Choose two to three websites on the history of the Internet and create five to seven powerpoint slides. Add some graphics and pictures to make your presentation interesting. Include only important points in your slides and make sure the text will be readable on the computer projector. You will be presenting your slides in class.

Step 2 Use the Maritime Research Web Site to find information on the Captains that served on following maritime vessels. Research the routes that your chosen vessel normally takes on the ocean or seas. Create a five to seven Powerpoint slides. Use the group you formed in Step 1. Pick only one ship for each group.

b) USS Constitution

c) USS Monitor

d) USS Constellation

e) USS Cod

f) USS Arizona

Step 3 Vist the Ellis Island Records. Pick one captain from your vessel. Trace his family roots from this database. Try to find out who his relatives were that came through Ellis Island in New York. Create a five to seven Powerpoint slides presentation on the information and data that you gather. Be sure to include complete names, birthdates, countries of origin and pictures if available.

Step 4 Write a one page reaction paper on your group experience in researching onthe Internet. What problems did you encounter? How did you solve them as a group? What this group research process comfortable for you? This is an individual paper.

 

 

Processes

At the end of Step 4, you would have created three Powerpoint Presentations.All of the slides created in this webquest will be presented in class. A copy of the slides has to be handed in class by third meeting. The individivual reaction paper will have to be typed double spaced and handed in class on the third meeting.

Conclusion

This webquest will take about 4- 5 days to complete. Please be dilegent in completing this assignment. Late submissions are not accepted except for a valid emergency.
