I do
not own Project Zero. The only things I own to do with it are my copy of the
game and this Walkthrough. I do not own or have anything to do with Wanadoo,
Tecmo or anyone else involved in the production. The names of the characters as
well as the game title are trademarks of the creators of the game.

2. Version History <vh>
31st
July 2003 – Completed Walkthrough and game but suddenly realised I’d saved over
my previously completed game. D’OH! Now I’ll have to complete the Ghost List
again. ^_^ Checked all sections for errors, added Special Items and Types of
Photograph. Currently listening to: All-American Rejects – Swing Swing
30th
July 2003 – Got an Eye Toy yesterday so only continued Walkthrough up to
Wandering Monk No. 1. Currently listening to: HIM - Resurrection
29th
July 2003 – Continued Walkthrough up to The Calamity. Checked other sections
for spelling errors and typos. Currently listening to: Nakariakov – No Limit (I
am not obsessed, honestly…)
28th
July 2003 – Continued Walkthrough up to Observatory. Added to History and wrote
Masks section. Am enjoying writing Histories of Himuro Mansion; for a fictional
place, it has a very interesting history. Currently listening to: Nakariakov –
Baroque Trumpet Concertos
27th
July 2003 – Due to Summer Holiday boredom, completed Ghost List on my copy of
Project Zero. Decided to write guide. Yay. Wrote items 1 – 5, 7 – 11 and 13;
started Ghost List. Started Walkthrough and wrote up to Demon Tag. Decided to
add Himuro Mansion History cuz the storyline was confusing me. Had fun writing
History. Currently listening to: Sergei Nakariakov – No Limit (On infinite
repeat ^^;;)
3. Introduction <in>
Firstly,
I’m only human, so please excuse any grammar/spelling errors/typos in this
document. If there are any major errors, please email me and I’ll correct it.
If you’re going to be using this guide frequently, I suggest you copy it to a
word processing program and save it, so you can use bookmarks to mark
whereabouts you are in the game.
This
guide started out as a Walkthrough, but I realised that
There
are spoilers in this Walkthrough, but only in the ‘History’ section. In the
Walkthrough I sometimes refer to a ghost by the name it had when it was alive
(i.e. Woman Hanging is Yae), but I’ll put their proper name at the start of
their section.
In
writing this guide, I’m assuming you know how to turn on your PS2, start a game
etc. If you don’t know the controls for Project Zero read the instruction
manual.
Who’s Who <ww>
Miku
Hinasaki – The main character. You control her for the majority of the game.
Mafuyu
Hinasaki – Miku’s brother. She’s looking for him.
Takamine,
Ogata and Hirasaka – A novelist, his editor and his assistant, all of whom went
missing in the Mansion while they were conducting research for Takamine’s book.
Kirie
– A mysterious girl from the Mansion’s past. She has two forms; Evil Kirie and
Young Kirie. Young Kirie appears as a little girl in a white kimono, and she
helps Miku. Evil Kirie is the older version, and usually appears with
snake-like things (evil spirits) behind her. She tries to kill Miku.
Munakata,
Yae and Mikoto – A folklorist, his wife and his daughter. They moved into the
Mansion some time ago, so Munakata could research the Himuro Family Rituals
(bad idea).
This Guide <tg>
I
suggest you read slightly ahead of where you are in the game, as then you can
prepare for any spirits that might be coming up.
I’ll
refer to some things by nicknames:
Gameplay
on Nightmare Mode: Nightmare (e.g. In Nightmare there are less items.)
Miku
running around with you controlling her: Explore Mode
What
you get when you draw the camera (with capture circle etc.): Camera Mode
When
I say just ‘Type-14’, ‘Type-37’ etc. I mean that type of film. (e.g. There’s
some Type-37 in the closet.)
I’ll
also use different symbols for different things.
#####
Intro
#####
This
shows you a new ‘chapter’ of the game is starting.
~~~~~~~~
Location
~~~~~~~~
This
means you’ve gone into a different room. Pay close attention to rooms in
relation to the Map and also routes between key rooms; if you’ve been to a room
before, I’ll just tell you to go there without step-by-step instructions.
------
Ghost:
------
This
means that an Immobile, Floating or Seal spirit should appear and/or is
snappable (oo I like that word).
******
Fight:
******
This
means a Hatred will appear that you can fight. You should be able to run away
from it if you don’t want to fight. There aren’t many Hatred like this.
OoOoO
Boss:
OoOoO
My
definition of a ‘Boss’ is a spirit that a) is a “Unique” Hatred Spirit, like
Novelist or Kirie, or b) has sealed all the exits to a room so you have to
fight to leave (a Mini-Boss, usually a common Hatred Spirit), or c) both of
these. What’s annoying is the fact that there are more ‘Bosses’ than normal
fights sometimes, not counting random encounters. Grrr.
%%%%%%%%%
Sidequest
%%%%%%%%%
This
means there’s some extra items or ghosts you can get that aren’t on your route.
Item List <it>
These
are basic items you come across in your game. You may not find some of them.
Herbal
Medicine – Restores a bit of lost health.
Sacred
Water – Restores health to full.
Camera
– Take pictures and drive away spirits with this.
Type-14
Film – Old film. Very weak but readily available, you can also get it from Save
Points.
Type-37
Film – Regular film; has average exorcismal power.
Type-74
Film – Powerful and fast film, hoard it for the last two nights!
Type-90
Film – The most powerful film of all. Almost instant charge time. In my
experience, there are two boxes in the Mansion; one in 3rd Night and
one in Final Night. If you get it, save it for Kirie at the end.
Spirit
Stone – This lets you use any Bonus Function you have enabled. One of them gets
used every time you press L1 in Camera Mode. They are fairly common.
Stone
Mirror – If you ever get your lifebar emptied while carrying one of these, you
won’t die. However, you can only carry one at a time, meaning if you use one
you then have to go find another one. Boo.
Tape
Recorder and Tapes – Belonged to the Novelist’s team. Some of the tapes have
useful information.
Red/Black
Notebook – Belonged to Hirasaka or Takamine. Contains information about the
research they were conducting.
Research
Scrap – Belonged to Munakata.
News
Article/Clipping – An item from a newspaper relating to the Mansion, the
Rituals or anything else relevant.
Special
Items <si>
After
completing the game, I looked up some Action Replay codes for Project Zero and
I saw codes for some objects I’d never seen before. I used the codes and got
them.
Type-7
Film – This is even weaker than Type-14. Of course, this introduces a new
challenge. ^_^
Moon
Incense – I’m still trying to figure out what this does. The description says
“Incense that soothes the spirit”, and it says “You cannot use this item here”
when you select it.
Sturdy
Notebook, Blood-Stained Scrapbook, Blood-Stained Notebook, Small Notebook, Book
of Folklore, Puzzling Words Rice Paper, Black Notebook, and Ancient Scroll –
These don’t seem to have a use, nor do they actually show up in the item menu
(there’s a blank space and the number 1 beside it). I believe these are the
Notebooks Miku keeps the Files she gathers in.
4. The Compass and the Map <cm>
Quite
a lot of the time in this Walkthrough I’ll simply tell you to go to a room
without telling you the exact route. This is where the Map comes in handy.
The
Map works like this: There’s crosshairs over the room you are currently in. The
walls of the room (on the Map, obviously) are highlighted in red, and the name
of the room is shown at the bottom of the Map. If you press the directional
buttons or analogue stick, the crosshairs move around, highlighting different
rooms. This makes it very easy to find a room you need to go to.
5. General Hints <gh>
1. Save
film! Film in this game is your ammo, so use it wisely. Common Hatred Spirits
(e.g. Man w/ Long Arms, Broken Neck) can be driven away with Type-14 film,
Type-37 if you’re really stuck, although Type-14 is more readily available.
Save higher-grade film (Type-74) for “Unique” Hatred Spirits like Folklorist.
Save Type-90, if you’re lucky enough to get it, for Kirie. Also, the only time
you’ll be able to damage Kirie is right at the end in the
2. For
big scores, use the camera’s Bonus Functions. Paralyze is invaluable for
snapping fast-moving ghosts.
3. Again,
for big scores, if you’ve paralyzed a ghoul centre the crosshairs of the camera
inside the circle before taking the final shot. This is the ghost’s core.
4. Learn
the controls! Fumbling around with buttons while being chased by Evil Kirie is
NOT the way to go. I also suggest you use R1 for the shutter button instead of
X.
5. If
the capture circle glows orange during combat, SNAP! This means you can get a
Special Shot for BIG points. Also does more damage than normal shots.
6. Use
the Map! It’s an invaluable tool. I myself am using it to guide you in the
Walkthrough.
7. Be
warned: There are random ghosts around. If you stick in one place too long,
especially in 3rd Night, you could be attacked, so explore quickly.
In the same vein, it’s a lot quicker to run (the using Square button) than
walk.
8. Read
the files. If you’re playing through for the first time, the various documents
lying around the Mansion contain enlightening information and codes.
9. In
rooms with Save Points, random ghosts can still appear. You have to kill any
Hatred around before you can use the Save Point (the light on it will be red if
a Hatred or Floating is around).
10.
Use the triangle button while in Camera Mode to perform an 180o
turn. Very useful.
11.
Examine things! Anything that seems out of the ordinary, or that is the main
subject of a camera angle (where the angle is such that the object is
emphasised), or that Miku looks at, examine it.
12.
Don’t forget to upgrade your camera. If you snap pictures that earn lots of
points, reward yourself: Increase the values on your camera using the Camera
menu.
13.
When some Floating and Hatred Spirits “die”, they leave a little blue flame. Go
near the flame and the person’s head will appear and say something.
14.
You CANNOT complete the Ghost List the first time you go through the game. This
is because you see one ghost (32. Man at Partition, Floating, Entrance, 1st
Night) before you get the camera. As far as I’m aware it is possible to get the
other 107 spooks on the list the first time through, but if you want to
complete the List you’ll have to start a new game from the completed one and
snap Man at Partition.
15.
Put Floating Spirits in higher priority than Immobile Spirits. If both appear
at the same time, remember the Floating Spirits come and go in a very short
time, while Immobiles don’t go anywhere as long as you’ve got the right night.
6. Walkthrough (Normal Mode) <wt_n>
######################
Himuro – Intro <wt_hi>
######################
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Entrance Hall
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When you start a new game, you see an intro FMV featuring Mafuyu and
narrated by Miku, then you gain control of him in the Entrance Hall.
-----------------------
Ghost: 77. Child Behind (Immobile)
Walk to Mafuyu’s left up to a cage. When you see the filament glow blue
draw up your camera and move it around until the capture circle glows blue,
then take a picture of your first ghost, Child Behind. It’s the spirit of a
child that got kidnapped by ghosts or something.
-----------------------
Go up the stairs opposite the front door. Take this opportunity to get
used to the controls. On the right, behind the beam, is a twinkly thing on the
ground, which is some Type-14 film. Items in Project Zero appear in Explore
Mode as twinkly things, but not always in FMVs. As you take the film, a quick
description of camera controls appears. There’s also an Angry Mask on the wall,
but this is nothing to do with you at the moment. Make your way to the left,
past the hole in the floor, to a camera with a blue light on a tripod. (It’s in
the corner, by the screen.) This is a save point. Save if you want, then turn
around and go into the door on Mafuyu’s right. You’re in the Rope Hallway.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rope Hallway
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Go along the hallway.
---------------------------
Ghost: 30. Rope Hallway Man (Floating)
As you go along the hallway, your filament glows orange. Quickly whip
out your camera and take a shot of Rope Hallway Man straight in front of you.
But be quick, or he’ll disappear.
---------------------------
Keep going forward until you see a mirror. There’s a fork in the path
here. Go to the left, and examine the door. Go back to the right, and go
through the door you see there.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fireplace Room
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Examine the armour opposite the door if you like. Now walk SLOWLY over
the fireplace.
---------------------------
Ghost: 31. Man Looking Down (Floating)
As you walk, your filament will glow. Quickly aim your camera upwards
and snap the Man Looking Down.
---------------------------
Keep going forward until you reach a staircase.
--------------------
Ghost: 78. Angry Man (Immobile)
You see the clock? Stand facing away from the clock, and there’s a
little room on your left. Your filament might glow blue here. Go into the tiny
room and face towards the bottom of the screen. Get your camera out and aim it
towards the top of the bookcase. Snap the scary
--------------------
Go up the staircase by the clock. Go to Mafuyu’s left and you’ll see a
sparkly thing on the ground. Grab it, and Mafuyu will know it’s Takamine’s
notes. When you read it and find out a bit about Takamine’s fate, a ghost
attacks you from behind…
****************
Fight: Bound Man (Hatred)
Firstly, don’t panic! The controls are explained to you in-game before
the fight. Anyway, when Bound Man appears, just stand there and draw your
camera. As soon as the circle glows blue, press R1 to take a photo. This will
damage Bound Man. Keep snapping him whenever you can until he dies. If you’re
too slow, he’ll come and hurt you.
See the blue bar in the bottom-right of the screen? That’s your lifebar.
As you get damaged, it empties. If it ever gets completely emptied, you die (if
you don’t have a Stone Mirror, that is). You replenish your lifebar with Herbal
Medicine and Sacred Water. Don’t worry about that too much though; this fight
is a piece of cake.
****************
When the fight is over, examine the door on the wall (it’s the only door
up there). You’ll find it’s locked. You’re pretty much done here, so go back
down the stairs and leave the Fireplace Room by the way you came in. (Is it
just me, or does Mafuyu look very jerky running down the stairs…?) Go down the
Rope Hallway, but suddenly…
########################################
The Strangling Ritual – 1st Night <wt_1n>
########################################
Random Ghosts: Bound Man
~~~~~~~~
Entrance
~~~~~~~~
We begin with Miku telling us how she came across
When you get control, go to where Mafuyu found the Type-14 film to get
Herbal Medicine. Go to the save point and save. Go through the door to the Rope
Hallway.
---------------------------
Ghost: 32. Man at Partition (Floating)
He’ll appear behind you, but since you haven’t got a camera you can’t
snap him.
---------------------------
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rope Hallway
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Go down the hall to the mirror and you’ll pick up the camera and see an
FMV about Mafuyu’s fate, thanks to Miku’s ‘sixth sense’. You can now capture
ghosts. You’ll also get Mafuyu’s notebook and scraps; read these for clues as
to the findings of Takamine and his team.
------------------------
Ghost: 33. Man on a Beam (Floating)
After you get the camera and go to Explore Mode, the screen is partially
obscured by a ghostly arm. Turn 180o and aim the camera up to the
ceiling to find Man on a Beam.
------------------------
Examine the mirror and the locked door if you like, then go to Fireplace
Room.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fireplace Room
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Examine the pile of antiques, especially the Lion Mask. You’ll find a
Herbal Medicine.
-----------------------
Ghost: 34. Bro’s Shadow (Floating)
As Miku runs to her left from the antiques, an image of Mafuyu appears
on the staircase. Snap him.
-----------------------
There are some Type-14 films to Miku’s left (in the drawer), and also in
the room where Angry Man was. Go upstairs using the stairs by the clock
(obviously), examine the locked door, and go to the gallery-type thing on the
left. Get the Herbal Medicine on the floor.
----------------------
Ghost: 35. Hallway Man (Floating)
After getting the medicine, carry on going towards the edge of the drop
(don’t worry, you can’t fall off). A ghost will appear at the bottom of the
fallen staircase. Quickly aim your camera downwards to snap
----------------------
WALK down the stairs.
------------------------
Ghost: 36. Man at Screen (Floating)
As you walk down the stairs, Man at Screen appears. Just draw your
camera and snap, cuz Miku will automatically face him.
------------------------
Examine the screen where the ghost was. Young Kirie will appear and tell
Miku to take a photo of the screen. So do so! When you see the door in the
photo, go up to the screen and examine it. Miku will push the screen aside and
go through the door.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lamp Hallway
~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you want some Herbal Medicine, follow the Hallway down to the double
doors and go in the doorway on the right. By the nailed-up door is the
Medicine. Anyway, go in the only other door in the place (the black one).
~~~~~~~
Library
~~~~~~~
Go forward and grab the news clipping on top of the chest of drawers. To
Miku's right there is a doorway; go through it.
------------------------
Ghost: 37. Wandering Man (Floating)
Almost as soon as you go through the doorway, Wandering Man appears.
Again, Miku will face him automatically so just draw your camera and shoot.
------------------------
As you go forward from the doorway, note the sliding doors on Miku’s
left. They’re locked for now. Carry on towards the window and grab your first
Type-37 film here. Notice how Miku looks towards the closet. Go to the closet
and open it. You’ll see (and hear) a tape recorder.
--------------------------
Ghost: 38. Dead Man’s Body (Floating)
As soon as you get to Explore Mode after seeing the body, draw your
camera, aim down a bit and snap a pic.
--------------------------
Pick up the tape recorder and you’ll see Ogata’s ghost and what happened
to him (poor guy). After the FMV you’ll have acquired the tape recorder, which
you can listen to the tapes you’ll find on. Select the tape from the item menu
to listen. Go through the door that opened behind Miku (the double doors).
~~~~~~~~~~~
Kimono Room
~~~~~~~~~~~
Grab the Herbal Medicine right next to the entrance.
------------------------
Ghost: 39. Man at Window (Floating)
Walk towards the gap between the left kimonos. Man at Window shows
himself but you have to be quick to snap him between the kimonos.
------------------------
Go round the kimonos to where the big red chest is. Examine both it and
the little table thing beside it.
--------------------------
Ghost: 79. Woman in Kimono (Immobile)
I had trouble finding this. You see the big kimonos to the left (your
left not Miku’s left!) of the mirror stand? Go to the gap between them and your
filament glows blue. Aim the camera between the kimonos and move it around
until the circle glows blue. Snap the Woman in Kimono.
--------------------------
Go to the window and you’ll see an item. It’s a White Tape. However,
you’ll be attacked from behind…
OoOoOoOoOoOoOo
Boss: Editor’s (Hatred)
Just snap away at him, but don’t let him get too close! If he hits you
he could take ¼ of your lifebar. If you think he’s too close, then go to
Explore Mode and run to a different location, then keep shooting him. You’ll
deal a lot more damage if you can get a shot while the circle glows orange.
OoOoOoOoOoOoOo
After you’ve exorcised Ogata, the camera’s seal will be unlocked. You
can now access the ‘Camera’ portion of the menu, and spend your Spirit Points
on upgrading it. Don’t go too mad with the Bonus Functions though; they are very
expensive. Oh, and you’ll also get the White Tape.
Go back to the mirror stand and take a photo of it (cuz the blue
filament said so). You’ll see the Lion Mask that was in the Fireplace Room, so
go back there.
***************
Fight: Editor’s (Hatred)
As you open the door to Lamp Hallway from the Library, Ogata appears
behind you. I haven’t included this as a Boss Fight because it’s not
compulsory; if you don’t want to fight then just run. He *should* stop chasing
you when you get to the Fireplace Room… she sez…
***************
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fireplace Room
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just examine the Lion Mask in the pile of antiques and you’ll get the
Hand Mirror. Return to the Kimono Room. But on the way…
------------------------
Ghost: 40. Man in Closet (Floating)
As you go to the Kimono Room via Lamp Hallway, WALK round the corner.
Man in Closet will appear in front of you, but rather a long way off. It
doesn’t matter, shoot him anyway.
------------------------
Ghost: 41. Standing Man (Floating)
Eeeeeeek! This one always makes me jump. As you enter the Library from
Lamp Hallway, Ogata suddenly appears RIGHT in front of you. Don’t be scared,
simply snap him.
------------------------
~~~~~~~~~~~
Kimono Room
~~~~~~~~~~~
Put the mirror on the stand. You’ll get a Brass Key and a Photograph of
Ogata. Notice the ropes that appear in the photo on Ogata’s limbs.
---------------------
Ghost: 42. Man Behind (Floating)
As soon as you go to Explore Mode, Man Behind appears… well, behind you.
Quickly go to Camera Mode and turn 180o, then snap him.
---------------------
***************
Fight: Editor’s (Hatred)
As soon as Man Behind has gone, Ogata appears as a Hatred. Does this guy
ever give up?! Anyway, just follow the same strategy as before, but be careful,
if he suddenly disappears (and the filament only glows faintly) he’s probably
teleported behind you. Run away and then turn to fight him again. You’ll get
your first Spirit Stone when he’s been banished.
***************
That Brass Key you got is the key to the padlocked door in Fireplace
Room, so go there.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fireplace Room
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As you enter, you’ll see an FMV of someone or something running
upstairs. But before you follow it, go to the Lion Mask and go to the left a
little bit. There’s a Black Notebook lying on the dresser, which contains the
plot for Takamine’s planned book, if you’re interested. There’s also a news
article in the notebook about a murder.
Go upstairs to the locked door. Use the Key to unlock it.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Tatami Room
~~~~~~~~~~~
To Miku’s left as you go in is a Research Scrap. In the top right of the
room is a Herbal Medicine. Go back to the entrance and face away from it, like
you did when you were first in the room. To Miku’s right is a door. Go in it.
~~~~~~~~
Anteroom
~~~~~~~~
This is the Anteroom, where you can save. Feel free to archive any
interesting photos you want to keep into an Album; they’ll get deleted when you
turn off the console if you don’t. Grab the Medicine and Film lying around,
then examine the small door in the top-left. Go back to the Tatami Room.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Tatami Room
~~~~~~~~~~~
Look at your Map. Note the location of the leftmost door. Got it? Now go
in that door. It’s in a little alcove and is opposite a screened-up door with
the paper torn. You’ll be in the Walkway.
~~~~~~~
Walkway
~~~~~~~
Just next to Miku is a pair of double doors. Open them for some Type-37.
Turn around and go down the Walkway.
--------------------------
Ghost: 43. Woman at Mirror (Floating)
As you walk down the hall, a woman will appear at the mirror. This is
Hirasaka, Takamine’s Assistant. Just snap her. Easy, huh?
--------------------------
Get the Red Notebook where Hirasaka was standing (it’ll be there whether
you got her or not). Look at the Map and go South, which is towards the bottom
of the screen in Explore Mode. Get the Herbal Medicine and examine the door. Go
back to the mirror and go East (left) down the stairs, where you meet…
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOo
Boss: Man w/ Long Arms (Hatred)
This can be quite tricky. First thing is: Don’t panic and start shooting
every millisecond. You’ll only waste film. The right analogue stick is a
lifesaver in this battle. Go into Camera Mode facing the Man w/ Long Arms and
snap him as the circle goes blue (orange if possible but don’t get too close).
If you’re feeling lucky then focus on him and back off using the right analogue
stick, so the camera’s power can charge up and you can do more damage.
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOo
Go back to where the Man w/ Long Arms appeared (if you moved during the
battle) and follow the walkway round. You’ll pass a crevice in the wall. Get
the News Clipping that’s inside. Carry on round the Walkway and enter the first
door on Miku’s right.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Burial Room
~~~~~~~~~~~
Take note of the location of this room, as it’s a key room in the game.
When you go in the filament might glow, but don’t be alarmed; it’s just
reacting to a talisman on the other side of that wall in front of you. Go up
the ‘corridor’ and turn round the end of the partition.
--------------------------
Ghost: 44. Wandering Woman (Floating)
As you walk forward towards the door she appears. Snap her.
--------------------------
Go to the door that makes your filament glow. You’ll find you cant go
through it because there’s a talisman on the door preventing you. Take a
picture of the door and it shows a staircase you don’t recognise. Turn round
and run towards the window, and go in the door on Miku’s right.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Rubble Room
~~~~~~~~~~~
Another important room later on. Save here and grab the Black Notebook
Scrap, Herbal Medicine and 5 Stones Document lying around on the floor. Return
to Burial Room.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Burial Room
~~~~~~~~~~~
Go forward from the Rubble Room door and get the Strangling Ritual
Document. Go to Walkway.
~~~~~~~
Walkway
~~~~~~~
Go towards the bottom of the screen and follow the path until you see a
door on Miku’s left. Try to enter it and you’ll come across a weird panel with
Japanese numbers on it. Now, I can’t read Japanese, so I had to use my common
sense to figure it out. For this particular door at this time, the correct code
is the date the Strangling Ritual was performed on. The date is in the document
you got in the Burial Room, so read it. It says the ritual was performed on the
13th of December, or 1312. This is our code. Yay!
Look at the number dial. The top button is 0 (zero), and the button on
its left is 1 (one). The buttons go in anticlockwise order from 0-9. Enter the
code 1312 and go forward.

Storeroom
~~~~~~~~~
------------------------
Ghost: 45. Girl Pointing (Floating)
As you walk forward into the storeroom you see her. This is the Young
Kirie showing Miku where the seal is. Just raise your camera and snap her.
------------------------
Go to the red chest in the top-right. There’s a Type-37 in there. Now go
to the top-left of the room, where Kirie was pointing, and Miku will feel a
ghostly presence.
----------------------
Ghost: 102. Seductress (Seal)
This is it: your first seal. When Miku feels the ghost and the filament
glows blue, draw your camera and move it around (aiming at the corner) until
you see a cloudy thing by the drawers, and the circle glowing blue. Don’t worry
about speed, it isn’t going anywhere.
----------------------
When you snap Seductress, the Burial Room talisman is broken. Go round
to Miku’s left and get the Herbal Medicine in the desk. Don’t linger here too
long; this is a very haunted room. Go back to Burial Room.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Burial Room
~~~~~~~~~~~
The talisman on the door is gone, so go through.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cherry Atrium
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A very important location. Memorize the entrances. As you go in you’ll
see a trail of blood on the floor, but don’t follow it just yet. Behind the
latticed screen in front of Miku is a door with a talisman, take a photo of it
to reveal what looks like a waterwheel. Now go back and follow the blood.
-------------------------
Ghost: 46. Woman on Porch (Floating)
As you go towards the Atrium stairs you see her. Snap her quickly.
-------------------------
At the top of the stairs on the porch there’s a Black Notebook. Carry on
to the left across the top of the stairs, to yet another talismanned (is that a
word?) door. Snap it to show what looks like some dolls in kimonos. Now go back
and down the porch stairs and follow the gravel path to a building. Remember
this building, it’s the Moon Shrine and it’s very important, although you can’t
go in it yet. There’s a tape on the bottom of the Shrine steps. There’s also a
Stone Mirror under the left of the steps; GET THIS ITEM, it revives you when
you die.
------------------------
Ghost: 80. Woman in Pain (Immobile)
Just near where the Stone Mirror is the filament glows blue. Search
around on the floor in Camera Mode until you find the cursed spirit Woman In
Pain.
------------------------
Now go to the right of the Shrine.
--------------------------
Ghost: 47. Woman in Atrium (Floating)
It’s Hirasaka again, and this time she’s heading out towards the Abyss.
Snap her quick.
--------------------------
Go through the door on the right of the Moon Shrine.
~~~~~
Abyss
~~~~~
There are lots of goodies here, and there will be later. But for now, go
forward until you see an FMV of Hirasaka. You’ll then be facing the waterwheel
with an item in front of it, try to pick up the item (it’s a Red Tape) and
you’ll see another FMV about Hirasaka’s death, featuring Evil Kirie.
When it’s over, pick up the Tape and walk to Miku’s left past the
waterwheel.
---------------------------
Ghost: 103. Woman Pulled In (Seal)
Just after you walk past the wheel, turn round and face it. The filament
should glow blue. Draw the camera and aim it towards the wheel. When you see a
woman's face, move as close as possible without the ghost fading. Also, try to
get a head-on shot. Congratulations, you just took an arty photograph!
---------------------------
When you’ve taken your pretty picture, the seal will be gone, but don’t
leave just yet. Grab the Stone Mirror on the jetty if you don’t have one, and
also watch the filament while walking around the lamps. The unlit one seems to
have some ghostly presence, so snap it. You’ll see that the lamp in the photo
is lit, so this means we need to light the lamp for something. When you’re
done, go back to the Atrium and back to the door you unsealed.
~~~~~~~~~
Doll Room
~~~~~~~~~
------------------------
Ghost: 48. Woman Turning (Floating)
As soon as you enter the filament glows orange. Snap the Woman Turning
directly across from you.
------------------------
This is the Doll Room. Notice the doll near the North of the room that
looks like Kirie. To her right on a shelf is a Red Notebook, and to her left on
the red shelves is a Spirit Stone.
--------------------------
Ghost: 104. Child Onlooker (Seal)
Turn towards the door and follow the shelves on Miku’s left. Near the
end the filament will glow. Snap a photo of Child Onlooker, which can also be
quite arty. The next seal breaks. But be prepared…
--------------------------
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO
Boss: Crawling Girl (Hatred)
After the seal breaks, an FMV occurs where we get a hint of the next
fight. When you have control draw your camera, turn 180o and aim at
the floor. Oddly enough, Crawling Girl is crawling along the floor. She can be
very difficult to see; if you can’t spot her but your filament’s bright orange
then move backwards with the right analogue stick, as chances are she’s under
your feet. Persevere, and you’ll win eventually.
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO
After Crawling Girl is gone, heal if necessary, then head back outside.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cherry Atrium
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
--------------------------
Ghost: 49. Woman Who Jumps (Floating)
And the award for the most annoying Floating Spirit in the world… I tore
my hair out trying to catch her. If you *really* want to complete the Ghost
List, then get out of the Doll Room and get to the other side of the trellis.
Go into Camera Mode and aim out into the Atrium, and use the right analogue
stick to move to the right. You’ll suddenly go out of Camera Mode; when this
happens IMMEDIATELY go back into Camera Mode and move the finder down a bit.
Woman Who Jumps will fall down the screen, giving you a nanosecond to capture
her.
--------------------------
******************
Fight: Broken Neck (Hatred)
Guess what?! As soon as Woman Who Jumps has disappeared from view,
you’ve got a battle to fight! Whoopee!! I don’t *think* this is a Boss Fight,
at least not in my definition. As with any Broken Neck simply keep the
viewfinder on her, with this one stay put, the camera won’t glow until the last
moment, but when it does it glows orange, so you can have a Special Shot for
free. Yay! This will drive her back, then keep snapping her from a safe
distance.
******************
When you’re finally out of Camera Mode, go to the second door you
unsealed (the other side of the porch stairs from the Doll Room. Enter.
~~~~~~~~
Stairway
~~~~~~~~
----------------------
Ghost: 50. Man Turning (Floating)
As soon as you enter and walk forward you’ll see him. A breeze to snap.
Go to the big mirror and grab the Lighter and Notebook. Leave the room
and go to the Abyss.
~~~~~

Remember the unlit lamp? Light it with the Lighter. You’ll get a Black
Carving. Return to the Stairway, but en route…
------------------------
Ghost: 52. Hanging Woman (Floating)
As you go back into the Atrium from the Abyss, Yae (Munakata’s wife)
appears hanging from a branch on the tree. Snap her, and then either go
straight to Stairway or do the Sidequests.

OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO
Boss: Assistant’s (Hatred)
The location is what makes this fight more difficult, because of the
lack of freedom of movement. Use the same strategy as for the Editor’s, but
bear in mind the Assistant’s is faster and tends to move sideways a lot.
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO
-------------------------
Ghost: 81. Monk into Dark (Immobile)
When Hirasaka is gone, go to the third block of stone from the room’s
entrance. Aim the camera upwards and move it about a bit. You’ll soon find the
ghost.
-------------------------
Follow the path to the other end of the room. Grab the Red Notebook, and
examine the door. The lock wants to know how many days the Shrine Maiden is
incarcerated for, which can be found in the Strangling Ritual Document. It says
the Maiden is held for 3669 days (that’s over ten years!), which is the answer
to the lock.

your film if need be, but be aware you can only get 30 Type-14 exposures, and
then only if you’ve got less than 30 in your inventory. When you’re done turn
around and walk towards the Well.
--------------------------
Ghost: 55. Man in Backyard (Floating)
He’ll appear in front of you. Piece of cake.
--------------------------
Ghost: 56. Girl Pleading (Floating)
Walk towards where the Man in Backyard was. When the screen goes fuzzy,
draw your camera and turn round. Aim up towards the structure and snap the Girl
Pleading at the window. This is the Young Kirie.
------------------------
Grab the tape on the well. Continue to follow the path.
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO
Boss: Assistant’s (Hatred)
This is a both harder and easier than the Fish Tank Room battle. Harder
because of the scenery and the ghost’s strength, but also easier because of the
scenery. Snap away at the Assistant’s trying your best to get Core and Special
shots, but beware when she crouches on the ground, cuz she’s gonna get you.
When she crouches, turn around and run to a safe distance. Keep it up and
she’ll go down eventually.
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO
Go back to the Save Point and freshen up, then carry on down the path
(maybe you’ll be able to go all the way down it this time!). Go through the
door at the end.

Ghost: 82. Girl Turning (Immobile)

Forest Path
~~~~~~~~~~~
A little way along, there’ll be an FMV showing the Narukami Shrine. Go
up the stairs.
-----------------------
Ghost: 57. Standing Man (Floating)
As you go up the stairs you’ll see Standing Man near the top. Snap him.
-----------------------
Ghost: 83. Warped Man (Immobile)
After seeing the Standing Man, face towards the Shrine, and then turn to
Miku’s right. Go slowly down this side of the steps. When the filament glows
blue, aim the camera at the trees until the circle glows. Snap the Warped Man.
You’ve now seen all the Immobile Spirits in 1st Night.
---------------------
Keep going up the stairs until you reach the door of the Shrine. On
Miku’s right is a Stone Mirror (which you might need). Load your Type-37 film
or the highest you’ve got, and examine the door.
This is a puzzle of the sort where you need to move things around in a
certain order. This first one is pretty simple, but I’ll show you anyway. Move
the stones in this order:
- Leftmost
- Rightmost
- Bottom
- Top left
Easy,
huh? Enter the Shrine.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Narukami Shrine

Go forward to the altar, and try not to gasp at the blood on the floor.
Examine the altar to find a Tape, and you’ll see a row of four Buddha statues.
------------------------
Ghost: 58. Crucified Man (Floating)
After examining the Buddhas, turn round quickly and aim upwards. Snap Crucified
Man.
------------------------
You’ll see an FMV featuring Takamine, who you then have to fight.
OoOoOoOoOoOoOo
Boss: Novelist (Hatred)
Firstly, I recommend you run out of the Shrine and into the open where
you have more room to manoeuvre. Stay as far away from Novelist as possible,
without lowering your scores. Just snap away, and try to get some core shots.
If you have paralyze, use it.
OoOoOoOoOoOoOo
The last photo you take of Novelist before he dies shows a Shinto Gate
(oddly enough, the one right outside the Shrine). There’s a Red Notebook on top
of the Shrine Stairs now. Grab it, and stand facing away from the Shrine. The
left pillar of the Shinto gate in front of you houses the last Buddha. Grab it
and go back into the Shrine. Go to the altar and examine it, your filament will
glow blue but don’t bother with a photo, just examine it again to reveal the
next puzzle, the Wounded Buddha Puzzle.

After the puzzle is complete the cupboard will unlock, netting you a
piece of the Holy Mirror… but not for long. An FMV showing Evil Kirie coming
out of the giant mirror plays, and she attacks you. You do go into Explore Mode
for this, but don’t waste your film; Kirie is invincible. She grabs Miku, and
shows her the Strangling Ritual. After an unsettling FMV (notice the ropes on
Kirie’s arms and legs, like the ones in Ogata’s photo), Miku wakes up.

2nd Night: Demon Tag <wt_2n>

Random ghosts: Bound Man, Broken Neck
Note: Every night the Mansion goes ‘back in time’ a little bit. The
ghosts are trying to draw Miku back to their relative time periods. This is why
things that were broken or collapsed in 1st Night are accessible in
later nights.
After your ‘Free’ save, you’ll see an FMV where Miku wakes up in the
Doll Room with rope marks on her wrists, and then she’ll lose the bit of the
mirror to a child’s ghost (this is Boy Hiding by the way). When you regain
control go to the wall to the left of the Kirie doll and take a photograph.
You’ll see that there’s supposed to be a scroll hanging on the wall. There’s
also some Type-14 and a Spirit Stone in the room. Go to the Rubble Room when
you’re done.
-------------------------
Ghost: 59. Child on Porch (Floating)

draw your camera and snap one straight away to stun her a bit, the move
backwards. Be careful; Blinded suddenly rush towards you, but the capture
circle glows orange so you can get a Special shot when she does this. She might
teleport behind you, so if she suddenly vanishes and the filament does not
glow, turn around and she’ll probably be there.

OoOoOoOoOoOoO
Take a shot of the door Blinded came from (it’s got a talisman), and the
photo will show you a crevice in a wall. Go down the stairs (left at the
mirror). Run to Miku’s left when you get to the bottom, and keep going. You’ll
pass a crevice. Grab the stone mirror if you need it.
-----------------------
Ghost: 107. Girl Hiding (Seal)
This is easy to spot. Aim the camera into the back of the crevice and
you’ll see her. Snap her to release the door upstairs.
-----------------------
Don’t go back upstairs yet, but carry on round the Walkway. When you get
to the Burial Room door, unlock it but don’t go in (just back off when Miku
opens the door). If you want some items, go to the Storeroom and enter the code
7925, which refers to how old the Shrine Maiden must be. There’s a Spirit Stone
and some Type-14 in the room. When you’re done go back upstairs and enter the
door you unlocked.
~~~~~~~~~
Koto Room
~~~~~~~~~
Go to the photos and you’ll see an FMV. When it’s over take the Diary on
the table, and go near the window to find the key to the safe. Go back to the
Tatami Room.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Tatami Room
~~~~~~~~~~~
Go to the little room with the chest in it. Grab the Spirit Stone on the
windowsill if you haven’t already. Use the key to open the chest and you’ll see
an FMV about the Folklorist Munakata. When it’s over you’ll also get some
research documents.
---------------------------
Ghost: 70. Man Before Study (Floating)
After you get the Research, he appears behind you. Snap him.
---------------------------
Ghost: 71. Observatory Man (Floating)
He’ll appear when you go into the main part of the Tatami Room.
--------------------------
Go back into the main part of the room. Find the big double doors in one
wall and go out to the small balcony.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Observatory
~~~~~~~~~~~
Just walk on to the balcony, which overlooks the Cherry Atrium. This is
where the first Observatory Man stood. You’ll see an FMV showing Yae hanging
from the tree and an item by her feet. I think this is implying you should go
to the Atrium, don’t you? ^_^ Don’t linger here or random ghosts will attack
you, so go to the Atrium (via the Walkway if you’ve forgotten how).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cherry Atrium
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Go to the item which was by Yae’s feet and try to pick it up. You’ll see
an FMV where Miku is seeing things from Mikoto’s point of view (gotta feel
sorry for that kid). You’ll then have to battle Yae.
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO
Boss: Woman Hanging (Hatred)
This is probably your hardest fight yet. I had to use a Stone Mirror the
first time I fought her, as Yae teleports more than Boy Hiding did, and she
sometimes materialises centimetres (inches) away from you. She also goes
invisible at times. If you’ve got Paralyze it’s invaluable to you in this
fight, but if you’ve got See instead that’s useful. Again, the hardest thing is
getting the first shot to stun her.
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO
The last photo of Yae shows some Kaguro dolls. Where are there dolls? In
the Doll Room. Go there now.
~~~~~~~~~
Doll Room
~~~~~~~~~
The filament will glow when you go near the right hand shelves, but
don’t bother taking a picture. Go to the left hand shelves (Miku’s left as she
enters the room) and examine the five dolls on the red mat. Take the top right doll
and go and put it on top of the drawer on the other side of the room. You’ll
get the Angry Mask. Go all they way back to the Entrance.
~~~~~~~~
Entrance
~~~~~~~~
Go to the wall on the right hand wall that has a place for hanging a
mask. Hang the Angry Mask on it and go through.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hidden Passage
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As soon as you go through the door, turn around and take the Angry Mask.
Go down the passage.
------------------------------------
Ghost: 88. Talking Ghosts (Immobile)
When the filament glows blue, aim the camera up at the ceiling and move
around until you see the Talking Ghosts.
------------------------------------
When you reach the fork, turn left. Take a picture of the door if you
want.
-----------------------------------
Ghost: 72. Hall Wanderer (Floating)
He’ll appear in front of you as you walk down the hall.
-----------------------------------
Go to the end of the passage and take down the Joyful Mask. Go back to
the fork, and go straight on (Miku’s left). Go to the door with the Sad Mask
and go through.
~~~~~~~~~
Mask Room
~~~~~~~~~
When you’ve gone through, turn and take the Sad Mask. There’s some
Type-74 to Miku’s left as she faces the door. Go round the passage to the
steps, and go up them to the Mask Pillar. Put the masks you have onto the
pillar and you’ll hear an unlocking sound, but ignore it for now. Go to the
back of the pillar and examine the Happy Mask. You’ll see an FMV where Miku
witnesses the Demon Tag Ritual (in which the Blinding Mask was used), which
explains all the Blinded we’ve seen lately. In fact…
OoOoOoOoOoOoO
Boss: Blinded (Hatred)
She’ll come as soon as the FMV is over. It’s easy to get Special Shots
in this one. Otherwise, just repeat the same strategy as previous battles with
her kind.
OoOoOoOoOoOoO
When she’s been banished, take the Happy Mask from the pillar. Go down
the steps from the pillar. On Miku’s left is a door. Put the Happy Mask on it
and go through.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Go round the passage and you’ll see some steps leading down. Go down
them to the garden; save here if you want. Grab the Gold Carving on the posts
surrounding the monument. Go back up the steps and go round until you see a
pair of double doors. Examine them, and there’s another carving puzzle. Move
them like this:
- Right
- Left
- Upper Right
- Bottom
- Right
- Left
Go through into the Buddha Room.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Buddha Room
~~~~~~~~~~~
Go up to the altar and grab the Mask of Reflection. But you’ve got
company…
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOo
Boss: Folklorist (Hatred)
In some ways, this is easier than Blinded. The Folklorist (Munakata) is
very slow, and he doesn’t attack so suddenly. However, he often teleports,
either to behind you or just outside your frame. If he vanishes and the
filament is black turn around, he’s probably there somewhere. If the filament
stays slightly glowing, move the finder around until you see him.
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOo
When the Folklorist has become a part of his art, go back to the Mask
Room.
~~~~~~~~~
Mask Room
~~~~~~~~~
When you’re in, turn and take the Happy Mask from the door. Go to the
pillar and attach the Happy Mask to it, and the door to the Blinding Room will
unlock. Go back to the Hidden Passageway, using the Mask of Reflection to open
the door.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hidden Passage
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Turn and grab the Mask of Reflection back. Go to the corridor where you
go the Joyful Mask, and go in the door on Miku’s right which is unlocked.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Blinding Room
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is where the Blinding or Demon Tag Ritual was performed. It’s a
very pretty room, considering. On Miku’s left is an altar. Go up the steps and
take the Blinding Mask (finally). You’re done here, so go back to the
Passageway.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hidden Passage
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Go to the door where you got the Joyful Mask and use the Mask of
Reflection to open it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lamp Hallway
~~~~~~~~~~~~
You’re in the doorway that was nailed up previously. Now that you have
the Blinding Mask, it’s time to return to Demon Mouth. Go to Cherry Atrium via
the secret door in the Kimono Room and go to Rubble Room. Save there, then
continue on.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Demon Mouth
~~~~~~~~~~~
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOo
Boss: Folklorist (Hatred)
You’ll have to fight him again when you enter. Bear in mind there isn’t
much room to manoeuvre, and that Munakata likes to teleport behind you. The
Triangle button is your saviour here. If you’ve upgraded the Speed of your
camera, this battle is a lot easier. Just repeat the same strategy as you used
in the Buddha Room to kill him, but be careful when he bends over, as he’s
going to try and grab you.
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOo
Go down the ladders and go to the door. Examine the right hand pillar
and you’ll see an FMV, then…
OoOoOoOoOoOoO
Boss: Blinded (Hatred)
This is the last time you’ll see Blinded as a Hatred (whoopee!). Dispose
of her as quickly as you dare.
OoOoOoOoOoOoO
When the ghosts are gone, attach the Blinding Mask to the pillar by the
door and go through after the FMV.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Banned Path
~~~~~~~~~~~
Just go down the path and you’ll see Munakata’s corpse, along with
another Mirror piece. You’ll also meet Evil Kirie again. Don’t bother to waste
any film on her.

The Calamity – 3rd Night <wt_3n>

There’s another FMV about the Strangling Ritual, and it also shows the
Calamity happening. The Family Master (the guy in the demon mask) is featured
here too. Miku wakes up afterwards in Demon Mouth. Just go in the door.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Banned Path
~~~~~~~~~~~
Walk down the path on the left side, grabbing items as you go.
-------------------
Ghost: 97. Munakata (Immobile)
As you walk the filament glows blue. Aim the camera at the floor and
snap the poor Folklorist.
-------------------
***********************
Fight: People Killed x3 (Hatred)
Yes, there are three of them. That’s cuz if there was only one this
fight would be easier than the first Bound Man on the 1st Night. Be
careful none of them are behind you while fighting, but you can get some good
Double Shots in this battle.
***********************
Go to the end of the passage and you’ll see that it’s caved in, but walk
up to the rubble, and Miku will see Mafuyu through a gap in the rocks. You
can’t go any further this way yet, so turn around and go back. On the way
you’ll see Kirie (don’t worry, the young one) who’ll show you a document left
by Munakata. Take it and return to the Rubble Room.
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO
Boss: Floating Face (Hatred)
You’ll encounter him in the Corridor. For me, he came out of the wall to
Miku’s right, so be careful as he can and will go through the walls. But let’s
be honest here, he’s a damn great cloud for heaven’s sake! So he’s not too hard
to spot unless he goes invisible, which is when the See ability might come in
handy, but no guarantees.
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO
~~~~~~~~~~~
Rubble Room
~~~~~~~~~~~
The door to the Burial Room is sealed, so snap it to show some rubble.
Guess what? It’s right behind you.
-------------------------
Ghost: 108. Crushed Woman (Seal)
Just walk around the rubble piles with your camera. The spirit is
visible as a cloudy thing. Snap her and exit to…

There’s some Type-74 film in the Blinding Room (as well as Blind Demon –

To get a Sacred Water, go to the Mask Room and look behind the pillar.

Ghost: 92. Ogata (Immobile)
Go to the Library. In the closet where the Tape recorder was is Ogata’s
ghost where he was killed by Kirie.

Ghost: 93. Hirasaka (Immobile)
Go to the Abyss and photograph the waterwheel when the filament glows to
see Hirasaka’s fate. (Note: In the Cherry Atrium on the way, snap the Moon

-------------------
Ghost: 94. Takamine (Immobile)
Go to the Narukami Shrine (The code for the Backyard door is 1347, how

there’s a high random ghost encounter rate here.

Go to the statues in this order and attach the ropes to them:
- Northwest
- Northeast
- Southwest
- Southeast
When you attach a rope to the correct Buddha, a rope will appear round
its neck and it will bleed. Lovely. When you’re finished, the Altar will open.
Grab the Teal Carving. You’ll see an FMV, then…
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO
Boss: Family Master (Hatred)
Geez, this guy is scary, and also quite hard to defeat. If you have a
lot of Type-74, use some, but don’t fritter it! Or just use Type-74 for the
first three or four shots, then finish him with Type-37. Like most harder
bosses the Family Master likes to teleport, but this time he’ll teleport close
to you but just out of the frame, and scratch you. Stun him with a shot, and
then keep a very close eye on his movement so you can hit him again. Be careful
of his sword; he can attack you from a distance with it. Paralyze is useful.
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO
When the Master has gone, exit via the Northwest door to the Stairway.
Carry on to the Atrium. (Note: You can also do the Sidequests here if you

- Cherry Atrium
- Abyss
-
- Backyard
(Maybe
not in that order, but hey.) Your job now is to go to those locations and
obtain the Priests’ writings. How you ask? By exorcising the Priests, who
happen to become headless (they were murdered by the Family Master). Oooh how
fun, 4 Boss fights. If you don’t do them in the order here that’s fine. Go to
the Cherry Atrium now.

Headless Priest (no. 1) (Hatred)
Type-37

he loses his head and starts floating towards you, you can’t damage him (a bit
like Broken Neck at some points in battles). Just leave Camera Mode and run

the ‘Headless’ form, so turn around and run to the open space. Be careful, this

It’s
quite likely he’ll start out headless, so run onto the walkway part. Also note
that this Priest likes to go under the floor then come up by Miku’s feet, so if
he disappears then check the floor; he could be behind you. Otherwise stay as
far away from him as possible, and you can use Type-37 to defeat him.

boy… this is Annoying with a capital A. Repeat the same strategy as in the
Buddha Room, but be careful of his teleportation, as he likes to trick you into
thinking he’s behind you when he’s actually just out if your frame. Also he’ll
perform a three-stroke combo of sword attacks which also have a much bigger
range, so when he draws his Katana, move out of the way! He’ll go down with
Type-37.

shots?) It’s quite easy to get Special Shots with her, as she rushes towards
you.
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO
When
the head is gone, keep walking along. Grab the Herbal Medicine.

Ghost:

you enter. Just in front of you is a large wooden cage. There’s a door to it on
the corner (check the Map if you’re stuck). Enter the cell. There are some
diaries lying around, and in front of the window there’s a Hairpin and a piece
of the Holy Mirror (4/5). When you go to the window you’ll see a lovey-dovey-yuk
FMV about Kirie and her love, who looks so much like Mafuyu it’s scary. When
you’ve got everything exit the cell.

to the Cherry Atrium. When you get to the top of the porch stairs in the

Boss: Shrine Maiden (Hatred)
This is fairly easy. You can’t see her at first, so draw the camera and

showing the failed Ritual and the Malice sweeping through the Mansion. When
it’s over, load your Type-90 (finally!) and prepare for battle. Examine where
the Holy Mirror is supposed to go.
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO
Final Boss: Kirie (Hatred… duh)
There are several things to remember in this battle. They are: a) I hope
you brought a Stone Mirror, cuz one touch from Kirie will kill you, b) You can
only damage Kirie when the capture circle glows orange, c) Bonus Functions
(like Paralyze) don’t work against her, d) She likes to play Hide-and-Seek with
you, and e) She blends in with the background. However, one consolation is that
she’s soooooo slow. Run to the door where you entered first, and turn and face
Kirie. Sometimes when she disappears after being damaged she hasn’t actually
teleported anywhere, she’s still in the same place only invisible, so just wait
until she reappears.
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO
When Kirie is damaged fully, Miku’s camera will break, revealing… a
Piece of the Holy Mirror! This could explain why the camera has the power to
show ghosts. When the FMV is over, quickly run to the left side of the Altar
and pick up the Mirror Piece. Miku will put them together to get the Holy
Mirror. Run to the back of the Altar where the Mirror goes (quickly; Kirie’s
chasing you!) and examine it. Miku will put the Mirror in.
Congratulations, you’ve just beaten Project Zero! Watch the ending FMV,
but don’t forget to skip the Credits (press Start), and save your game. Now, if
you load that ‘Clear Data’ file, you’ll get another screen that gives you options
such as Battle Game and Sound Test. If you select ‘Story Mode’ you can play
through the game again, with a different costume if you want, to complete the
Ghost List. Enjoy! ^_^
7. Nightmare Difficulty Pointers <nd>
In
case you’re wondering why I’m not writing a full Walkthrough for this mode,
I’ll say this: there’s no point. The game and storyline doesn’t change in this
mode, this only difference is that it’s harder, and fairly difficult to unlock.
This special setting is only available after you complete Battle Mode, and to
unlock that you have to complete the game once at least. Therefore, I’m
assuming that if you’ve unlocked Nightmare Difficulty you don’t need to be told
how to play the game. :)
In
Nightmare you don’t have the little filament thing anymore, so you’ll have to
use your eyes and ears to find ghouls. I REALLY recommend you obtain the Zero
Special Function before playing through Nightmare. This keeps the camera’s
mystical power charged to full at all times, and you can deal much more
damaging shots straight off. To get Zero, you have to complete the ghost list,
so if you haven’t then play through the game in Normal to snap all the ghouls.
In the same way, items are rarer in Nightmare, so play through Normal first and
stock up on film, spirit stones, sacred water and such if need be.
The
spirits do a lot more damage in Nightmare, so try to keep a stone mirror in
your inventory. If you’re looking for an S-Rank in this mode, which you need if
you want Special Costume 3, save only between nights and make sure every shot
gets at least 1000 points, and that your final shots get at least 3000 apiece
in most cases. Eeek!
8. Camera Functions <cf>
Types of Photograph <tp>
By
taking photos of spirits in different ways, you can get more points.
Special
Shot
This
is when you shoot when the capture circle glows orange.
Zero
Shot
This
is what you get if you take a photo when the camera’s Spirit Power is fully
charged.
Core
Shot
Ever
noticed the little circle that shows up in a spirit when you look at it? This
is the spirit’s core. Centre the crosshairs of the camera inside this circle to
get a Core Shot.
Bind
Shot
If
you paralyze a ghoul then snap it, you’ll get this.
Close
Shot
Get
reeeeeeeeeeeeal close to a ghost before taking the shot to get this.
Bonus Functions <bf>
These
are unlocked after a fight with Editor Ogata in the Kimono Room near the
beginning of 1st Night. To activate them (break the seals) you have
to give up some of your points.
-
Pressure (Cost: 16,000)
This
‘pushes’ Hatred Spirits away from you. Most effective against ghosts that rush
towards you, like Broken Neck. However, you’ll find it VERY difficult to get
Close, Zero, Core and Special shots by using this.
-
Slow (Cost: 18,000)
More
useful than pressure, this slows down Hatred Spirits (oddly enough). Best used
against fast-moving spirits and spirits that do certain things before a Zero
shot opportunity.
- See
(Cost: 12,000)
Causes
ghosts to become completely visible. Can be useful against ghosts that
dematerialise a lot if you don’t have Paralyze.
-
Paralyze (Cost: 20,000)
Paralyzes
spirits for a short time, allowing you to take Core shots with ease. Activate
it when the capture circle glows orange and you’ll be able to grab a Special
shot as well. Get this function first.
-
Search (Cost: 14,000)
Automatically
centres the crosshairs on a ghost’s core. You should be able to do this
yourself. What a waste of points.
Special Functions <sf>
To
break the Special Functions seal in the first place, you have to beat the game
once. You also get Zoom when you do this.
-
Sense (Complete Battle Mode)
Enabling
this gives you little arrows on the crosshair in Camera Mode, which tell you
where Hatred Spirits are. Cuz you don’t have the filament in Nightmare, Sense
is most useful there.
-
Chase (Complete Battle Mode with an S-Rank on every stage)
With
the exception of Kirie, this makes the camera automatically follow a Hatred’s
core when you hold R2. However, as you play you get to know the movements of spirits,
rendering Chase pretty worthless.
-
Zoom (Complete the game once)
Only
really useful for taking arty photos of far-off Floating Spirits. Easy to
unlock, though.
-
None (Complete the game on Nightmare Difficulty)
Allows
pictures to be taken without using up film. Useful for taking pictures of clues
and Immobile Spirits, but don’t forget to re-enable Zero for fights if you have
it.
-
Zero (Complete the Ghost List)
The
most useful of the Special Functions, Zero keeps the mystical power of the
camera fully charged at all times! This makes it a lot easier to snap Zero
shots, and it definitely makes fights easier.
9. Ghost List <gl>
To
unlock the in-game Ghost List, complete the game once. There will be gaps in it
if you haven’t found some spirits. This list order is how it appears in-game.
Once you snap a spirit, an entry will appear in the list with a little red
thing beside it. To register the new entry, simply select it (with X) so that
you can read the description.
Some
of the spirits appear on all nights, some only on some nights. These are shown
in the list. If a spirit appears at more than one location or time, it’s
labelled ‘Various’.
Spirit Types <st>
Hatred
= These are the spirits that can hurt you, like Blinded and Bound Man. All
random ghosts are Hatred; the likelihood is you’ll run into ALL the Hatred at
least once during a normal game. The filament glows orange when they’re around.
Floating
= These also make the filament glow orange, but Floating do not harm you, and
only appear for a short time at a certain point. These are the hardest ghosts
to snap, as some of them move quickly (Especially the Woman Who Jumps and the
Kid Hiding. I spent an hour trying to get these the first time. ¬_¬;;;)
Immobile
= These are the spirits of people who died in gruesome ways. Their cursed
ghosts were trapped in one place by the Malice, and they cannot move around.
They all appear at different places and times, but some can get you a BIG
score, for example Kirie’s Love in the Abyss in the Final Night gets you 5,000
points. They’re easy to snap… once you’ve found them that is. They make the
filament glow blue. Also, quite a lot of Hatred, after you’ve defeated them for
the last time, will turn into Immobile Spirits somewhere in the Mansion and you
can photograph them freely. However, you can only snap Immobiles once, then
they’ll go to the other world or wherever it is they go. You can get some very
attractive (arty) photos of Immobile Spirits if you know exactly where they
are, as the capture circle on the camera glows blue if you’re near them even if
they aren’t in the circle.
Seal
= You’ll get these automatically, as you have to take pictures of them to
unlock doors. Doors with talismans (Talismen? Talispersons?) on them make your
filament glow blue, and if you take a photo of the door it’ll show you where
the seal is. You go to the location in the photo and you’ll find a seal ghost
(by a blue filament). Snap it and the corresponding door will open. Seal ghosts
can also get you some very arty photos (Woman Pulled In is one of the best), as
they are immobile.
The
list is in order of type, and within the types is the order of appearance in
the game (with a couple of exceptions; look at the Time of an appearance).

The
Battle Mode minigame is unlocked after you complete the game once. Completing
Battle Mode is by no means compulsory, but many of the Special Functions and
other goodies require you to do something in Battle Mode.
Battle
Mode consists of twenty ‘Missions’, each of which sticks you in a room in the
Mansion with a ghoul or two. It’s your job to kill it using the limited film
and Spirit Stones supplied to you; you cannot use your own stock. Naturally,
the more missions you do, the harder they get. As far as strategy is concerned,
all these spirits you’ve met before, so just repeat what you did to defeat them
when you first fought them. To get an S-Rank your final shot has to score 7000+
points.

12. Ideas for Challenges <ic>
This
section came about after I found out about Type-7 film.
I,
being a seasoned gamer, know there’s nothing better gamers like than a
challenge. These are just ideas to test your skills in a regular game. If you
feel that’s not hard enough, do it in Nightmare.
Try
and beat the game…
- Using nothing higher than Type-37.
- (This can only be done on at least the second time through) Snapping
every single spook on the list in one game.
- Getting every single item including the hidden ones and the ones that
aren’t on your route. OK so this isn’t TOO hard.
- (This one’s for those with a nervous disposition) At night in a
thunderstorm with no-one else in the house. Go on, I dare ya.
- Only saving between nights.
- Without upgrading your camera’s stats (Range, Speed and Max Value) at
all during the game.
- Without getting a Stone Mirror (or never having to use one).
Of
course, the Ultimate Challenge (which I frankly think is damn near impossible
but I bet there’s someone out there who can do it): - Never upgrade the camera,
don’t use a Stone Mirror (or only use one for the final fight as Kirie kills
instantly), save between nights, use a Gameshark to get infinite Type-7 then
use that and only that throughout the game (apart from maybe for Kirie), in a
thunderstorm at night while alone in the house… basically, combine all of the
above list and change to Type-7. Of course if you’re really daring (or
suicidal) you could try this in Nightmare. If you manage this challenge on ANY
mode… I dub thee Project Zero Champion! :-D
13.
Note:
Most of this is my theories based on documents found in the game.
Himuro
Mansion is where the game takes place. It was owned by a powerful and wealthy
landowner and his family (the Himuros). It was also the home of some very
horrible rituals. The exact location of the mansion is not recorded on any
modern Map, and locals will not enter it.
The
game is based on a true story which happened in
WARNING: This bit has spoilers. Read at your own risk.
I was a bit confused by the story at first, so here’s a summary of the
Mansion’s history. This is basically the story of all the events in the
Mansion, and the history of Miku and her camera.
Himuro Mansion used to be occupied by the Himuro Family. They were
weird, and they practiced cruel and bloodthirsty Shinto rituals, often using
masks. The Demon Tag Ritual was one, where they would take a pre-defined young
girl or woman and put a mask on her. This wasn’t just any mask; but a mask with
sharp stakes shoved through the eyes from the front, so that when the Family
Master put the mask on the woman, her eyes were destroyed. This is where
Blinded spirits come from. The Blind Demon Ritual is listed as using the
Blinding Mask that has been used in the Demon Tag Ritual to open the Demon
Mouth. Often confused with this is the Blinding Ritual, the process by which
the priests chose a girl to be the Rope Shrine Maiden ten years later. I reckon
it was called that because the girl was forbidden to lead a normal life, and
was ‘Blinded’ to the real world.
Under Himuro Mansion is the Hell Gate, which leads (yup you guessed it)
straight into Hell, where the Malice, a terribly evil force, dwells. To keep
the gate closed (why not just move house?) the Himuro family practiced the
Strangling Ritual. They chose a girl, at a very young age, to be a Rope Shrine
Maiden. She was kept isolated from any contact with the real world, and allowed
only to talk to priests and such, for 3669 days, which is just over ten years.
As the girl must have been over 7 years, 9 months and 25 days when she was
chosen according to Himuro rule, this means she could be spending her teens in
a dungeon. How fun.
When the Maiden had been isolated for ten years, she was taken to the
Rope Altar. The Rope Altar was (and still is) a large flat round stone, and
five wooden contraptions (a bit like the ones on top of Medieval Torture racks)
still stand around the edges of the stone. The Maiden would lay flat on the
stone, and ropes would be tied to her arms (wrists), legs (ankles) and head
(neck). The other ends of these ropes were then attached to the wooden
contraptions. Priests would then turn the contraptions, pulling the ropes
harder and harder, until the Maiden was strangled and her limbs were torn off.
When she was dead the priests and the Family Master tied up her mutilated body
in front of the
In the nineteenth century the woman in the white kimono, Kirie, was
chosen to be a Shrine Maiden when she was very young. She endured the isolation
until one day, when she saw a young man outside in the garden through her cell
window. A bit later in her life, still in the cell, she saw the young man
again. As she was a teenager at the time, Kirie felt something for this
handsome young lad, and arranged to meet him. She developed strong feelings for
him, and the Head Priest became worried she would lose her potential as Shrine
Maiden. He arranged to have the young man murdered in the Abyss; his spirit
appears as an Immobile Cursed Ghost in Miku’s Final Night. However, Kirie
didn’t forget the young man, and she was torn between her feelings for her love
and her duty as a Shrine Maiden. So, when the Ritual was carried out in 1837
using her as the Maiden, it failed and the Malice escaped, damming 1347 souls
in the Mansion. The Family Master was driven insane by the Malice and murdered
everyone left alive in the Mansion, then committed suicide. The Malice also
ruined the Mansion and created much of the debris Miku and Mafuyu see. Kirie is
responsible for most of the deaths that happened in the Mansion afterwards, by
either directly killing people or driving them insane, as she wants others to
suffer as she had to.
Ten years after the Malice escaped, Munakata the Folklorist moved into
Himuro Mansion with his wife Yae and young daughter Mikoto. Mikoto found a
camera, but when questioned she only said a girl in a white kimono gave it to
her. On a family trip to the mountains, Yae used the camera. Mikoto begged her
to give the camera back, but her mother did not want the girl to see the
horrible things the camera exposed. However, eventually Yae gave in, and let
Mikoto go and play Demon Tag with the camera. This was a popular children’s
game, and was normally harmless, but because Mikoto and her friends played it
on the cursed ground of Himuro Mansion, they were abducted by evil spirits.
Some of the children’s ghosts appear as Floating Spirits, others appear as
Hatred. Yae was so obsessed with her guilt at giving Mikoto the camera and her
subsequent disappearance, that she eventually lost her sanity and hanged
herself from the tree in the Cherry Atrium.
Meanwhile, Munakata was investigating the Mansion, and he found the
Demon Mouth and about the Blinding Ritual. He also solved the Mask Puzzle and
obtained the Blinding Mask, which he used to open the Demon Mouth and get to
the Blinding Room. He also found out about the Strangling Ritual and about
Shrine Maidens, but when he got down to the Banned Path, the ghosts murdered
him. Unlike the others, Miku finds his actual body and not just a spirit. His
ghost wanders the Mansion as a Hatred now, and he appears on the Banned Path as
a Cursed Spirit in the Final Night.
Much later, in this century, a Japanese novelist named Junsei Takamine
planned a research trip to the mansion. He took his editor Koji Ogata and his
assistant Tomoe Hirasaka. Takamine found out about the strange deaths in the
area; bodies had been found with their limbs and heads torn off for example
(like in the Strangling Ritual), and he decided to base his book on them. He
needed to find out about the Shinto Rituals though, so he researched and found
that the Himuro family was rumoured to have carried out such rituals in the
past, although there was little or no written record of them and he was working
from folklore.
During the trip all three of them started seeing things, and Ogata began
to lose it first. Rope marks appeared on his wrists and ankles, and he left
several tapes and notebook scraps of just things like “There’s another rope…!”.
Evil Kirie appeared to him, and although he hid from her, she took his soul.
His body was found with his limbs strangled off in the closet in the Library.
Even before discovering poor Ogata’s body Hirasaka had begun to see things, and
because she had the ‘6th sense’ it was worse for her. She saw all
the people whose souls had been tainted by the Malice, and ghosts tormented
her. Ropes also appeared on her body, and she ended up being killed by
strangulation (by Kirie) at the Waterwheel. She now exists as the Woman Pulled
In seal, as well as Hatred and Floating Spirits.
Takamine had just started to show rope marks when he discovered
Hirasaka’s body. Because of the research he’d done, he knew it was Kirie who
had killed both his companions. He hurried to complete his research, and his
notes led him to Narukami Shrine in the Backyard. He realised how to complete
the Headless Buddha puzzle and recorded where to find the missing Buddha, but
Kirie showed up and killed him. There is some talk it was a crucifixion on the
Shrine ceiling. Takamine is now a Floating Spirit (Crucified Man) and Hatred
Spirit (Novelist), and also an Immobile Spirit after 1st Night.
So where do Mafuyu and Miku come into this long and bloody history then?
Well, Mikoto (daughter of Munakata) was adopted by the Hinasaki family after
her parents disappeared. A news article describes how she returned from her
disappearance with no memory of what happened to her. The only things she
brought with her to the Hinasakis were her uncanny ‘6th sense’, and
her mother’s camera. The camera took pictures exposing spirits. Mikoto grew up
with the Hinasakis, married and had a child; Miku and Mafuyu’s mother Miyuki.
Miyuki also had the 6th sense, and inherited the camera. When
she died after a mysterious illness (brought on by the camera?) she left the
camera to her children, Mafuyu and Miku, who had both been born with the 6th
sense. Mafuyu grew up to be an aspiring journalist. He was a huge fan of Junsei
Takamine and was very concerned when news got out that the novelist was
missing. Mafuyu journeyed to Himuro Mansion to find Takamine and his team, but
Kirie was still there. Mafuyu bears an uncanny resemblance to the young man
Kirie fell in love with, and therefore she takes Mafuyu, not to kill, but to
love.
When Mafuyu didn’t return from the Mansion after two weeks, his little
sister Miku decided to find him. She used notes left by her brother to lead her
to the Mansion, but she also said the something called her there. As she
searched for Mafuyu over four nights she uncovered the Mansion’s history (this
is what happens in the game). When she finally found the real Mafuyu, after a
series of time-delayed images throughout the Mansion, she also met Evil Kirie.
After a battle with her Miku used the Holy Mirror to cleanse Evil Kirie’s soul,
and the tarnished part of the Shrine Maiden went back into Hell. Kirie realised
her true duty, and took her position as the Seal that holds the Hell Gate shut.
However, Mafuyu felt both pity and love for Kirie, and volunteered to stay with
her. Miku escaped the Mansion as it collapsed, and all the condemned souls
inside were freed and sent up to Heaven.
The Masks <tm>
Some people have told me they’re confused by all the masks in the game,
so I’ll summarise. The information here is basically what you find out in the
game if you collect every file and document.
The Blinding Mask
This was used in the Demon Tag Ritual. It’s like an eye mask but with
two sharp stakes pushed through the eye holes from the front. It was put on a
woman by the Family Master, destroying her eyes. These hapless victims now
wander Himuro Mansion as the ever-annoying Blinded Spirits, still feeling pain.
The Blinding Mask is the key to the Rope Altar. You find this in the Blinding
Room in Night 2.
The Mask of Reflection
This was worn by the Family Master when he performed rituals. It’s a
plain white mask with a nondescript expression… until someone puts it on. When
they do, the mask changes and its facial expression reflects the nature of the
wearer. According to legend “it can become the face of an angel or a demon”. At
the last ritual (the one that failed), the mask turned into the face of a demon
when worn by the Family Master. You find this during the Mask Puzzle in Night
2.
Angry Mask, Sad Mask, Happy Mask etc.
These
are stored in the Mask Room deep inside the Mansion. They were probably worn by
family members during rituals, as all the participants in a ritual were related
and they wore masks to eliminate the Maiden’s attachment to her family. You
find these masks in Night 2.
Places in the Mansion <pm>
These
are some important places and their history.
The
Moon Shrine
This
is the building in the Cherry Atrium that you gain access to in Night 3. It’s
just the entrance to the Moon Well, which you open by fighting the four
Headless Priests and the Family Master. Supposedly the first Rope Shrine Maiden
was buried in the Shrine, but no body has been found in the Shrine itself.
The
Moon Well
This
is accessed via the Moon Shrine. It is an empty well. On the night of a
Strangling, moonlight shines down to the bottom of the well. The Rope Shrine
Maiden stays at the bottom of the well to purify her body with moonlight, and
she reaches the bottom of the well by a path connected to the basement that
only she can use. There is a mummified, limbless body of a woman at the bottom,
which could be the first Rope Shrine Maiden.
Narukami

Junsei Takamine was killed by Kirie. Also contains a single piece of the Holy
Mirror.

the Strangling Ritual. It’s in the basement at the end of the

This
is where the Malice came from. Miku sees the Gate during her travels, but it’s
about the one door in the Mansion she cannot go through (well, would you want
to?!). She battles Evil Kirie here to free both Mafuyu and Kirie’s good side,
represented by the Young Kirie, from the tainted Maiden.
