Cornell & Diehl Recommendations

For the past several months I have experimented with trial packs from Cornell & Diehl, looking for the perfect tobacco that I can smoke on a daily basis in the mornings and early afternoons.  At night, I have my Syrian latakia blends to enjoy after dinner, and while reading a
mystery or spy novel.

I have always stayed away from Virginias as it caused tongue bite, but
I find that I enjoy C & D Plantation Evening, and Yale Mixture.
Does anyone have any recommendations for other C&D blends that are
similar to the two I mentioned?

Todd R Jerabek

Another blend to enjoy is called Orthodoxy, similar in some ways to Plantation Evening - except there is some Orientals added to it.

I really enjoy Black Dawg as well, it is very nice.

Other C&D blends I enjoy are Baalbek, Bayou Night, Night Train (a VA blend, but doesn't bit like so many others), and Bow-Legged Bear.

Tony Coronado

Todd, with that sample you gave me of Orthodoxy, it reminds me of a lighter version of Dunhill EMP.  I think a little stoved VA would really give that blend some sweetness!  Any of the Two Friends (a collaboration between C&D and Greg Pease) blends are great.

Doc Elder

I fell for Night Train  and Poplar Camp instantly... one I've been trying out over the last few days that's looking like a definite order after I get back from the Christmas trip home is Orion's Arrow.  It has a decent bit of Turkish to it that gives it a bit of an exotic touch without being over the top.  Truth be told, I'm a C&D novice myself, but I've thoroughly enjoyed these and they ain't bit me yet.

Rev. Melissa Robitille

Well, I'm not much on Plantation Evening, but I like Yale Mixture. Some others I like are Byzantium, Exclusive, and Oriental Silk. Byzantium's pretty hefty on latakia, but all 3 have it - Exclusive and Oriental Silk are lighter, I believe both have some VAs and perique, but I've never had an incident of tongue bite with them. On the other hand, Merlin's Choice I *hated* - it's the one and only C&D blend that I just couldn't stand, probably because of the burley.

Michael George

I liked those two, also, though I did think that they were a lighter side.  I LOVE Newmarket.  I think it's the deertongue that I like in it, cause I also like Crooner.  I just picked up some Two Friends Redwood that I think it marvelous, too.

Other blends that I've noted as wanting to maybe get a pound some day:

Blends that I like, but are on the heavier side (better evening smokes for me):

Roger Bergman

I like the Bayou Night.  High in perique and no tongue burn at all.

Tom Clemons

I agree with Roger, Bayou Night is excellent.  But I have to smoke it sitting down and rather slowly, or the perique will get me good.

I'm a big fan of C&D blends. While I haven't experimented much with their VA and VA/Perique blends (yet!) I think that Byzantium might be one of the best Latakia/Perique's I've ever had. Hell, one of the best blends I ever had period! Very rich and complex with a mouth-feel to the smoke of dark velvet and cream.

George W.

Bayou Night is at the top of my smoking list(it's the first blend that I ever bought a pound of), very cool, smooth, and bite free.

Exclusive is a nice full bodied uncomplicated all-day smoke.

I also like Plantation Evening, Orion's Arrow, Morley's Best, and Haunted Bookshop.

Ken Dixon

My favorite blender...

With C&D blends it's a good idea to give whatever you order a few months to a year of aging. Craig blends on request so whatever you order is going to be a newborn and won't be at it's best for a while.

I can recommend a few for you, Bob. #101 Morley's Best and #107 Haunted Bookshop are two of my favorites. If you like Perique with your Virginia and Burley, try #063 Bayou Night. Finally, if you want a lot of Latakia for your evening smoke, try #412A Billy Budd and #970P
Pirate Kake. In their tinned blends, I am especially fond of Bowl-Legged Bear. It reminds me a lot of Esoterica Pembroke, they are both full English blends packed in a crumble cake.

Mark J. Adamcik

My favorite C & D blends are Blockade Runner and Canal Boat. Blockade Runner is a really well crafted Navy Cavendish. I broke in a new Peterson second with it, and it help to form a good, hard, thin cake. Canal Boat is an example of Latakia and Black Cavendish working harmoniously. The aroma is almost spruce-like. Both blends smoke dry.
