Still just a coupla months into pipe smoking and trying to resist the urge to order every tobacco out there, I am hoping for some advice of the "if you like x then try y" variety.

I love Barbary Coast- is there another Burley-based blend I should try? (I know it won't be the same!)

I enjoy Mephisto and Pembroke but did not enjoy Cross-Eyed Cricket. What else would you recommend in a, what should I call it, tastefully-topped English blend?

Trying not to order too many sample assortments - too much tobacco, not enough time!

Judson Mitchell

If you like Barbary, I would suggest Edgeworth Slices.  It's a burley based blend with a subtle flavor.  (I tend to think the flavoring in both of these is too subtle, that's why I put them together).  E.S. would also be a good introduction to flakes for you.

As far as flavored english, a lot of people like McClelland's Frog Morton.  You might also try Dunhill Aperitif and Gawith's Perfection.

Judson: I hear you with regard to Edgeworth Slices, and I'll give that a try, myself. I wonder, though, what would you or anyone else recommend that would have a prominent "nutty sweetness" (I think of granola, but no cinnamon! LOL) without being out-and-out goopy aromatic?

Terry Freeman

Many folks, especially Bear <g>, will laugh at me for this, but I suggest Edgeworth Ready Rubbed.  It's not as heavy as the sliced and has a nice mildly sweet top note (molasses?  Licorice?  I dunno. . .) over some very nutty Burley.  I'm NOT a burley fan, but I find myself smoking this quite often.

WRW

I'm not laughing Terry. Jeff Schwartz truned me on to mixing Edgeworth RR with a straight Virginia (I use Virginia #1). It makes a nice sweet and nutty smoke. Not up to the standard of Barbary Coast but pleasant none-the-less. I find with pipe tobacco that sometimes different is as good as better.

Runowski

Well, Terry's right about that.  Despite the bad press that Edgeworth has recieved over the last few months, both the RRd and the sliced offer a remarkable smoking experience.  No, neither are subtle or complex, but they both offer a quiet and consistent quality that a mature smoker appreciates.

Along with the others mentioned in replies, try:

At the risk of offending practically everyone on this ng, if you like Barbary Coast, you might give the new, Lane made Sir Walter Raleigh a try, or some good old fashioned Half and Half.  Not 'premium' tobacco, to be sure, but decent smokes in their own way.  Load 'em up in a cob on a lazy afternoon.

Michael Parker

Butera Kingfisher is a nice burley based blend.  Burley, VA, and Perique.

Smoketalk

If you liied Pembroke Try  And So to bed....same base with an Ale blender as opposed to Cognac....Renaissance is and excellent English by the way...an Penzance...I'm not qualified to recommend a burley blend.

Thanks for the suggestions!

So far I have tried and enjoyed Frog Morton on the Town and look forward to trying Frog Morton. Judson Mitchell was kind enough to send some Gawith's Perfection to me- I plan to try that this weekend. Pennington Gap's description is very appealing to me and I expect it will be in my next order.
